moving, dont want to leave/rehome crabs, need advice

Post by z-the-monster » Wed Dec 17, 2014 11:05 pm

alright, so basically i'm getting forced out of my house and i have to move 800 miles away.
this isnt what im worried about, its the crabs. i'm not entirely sure i can take them with because i have other animals and two people's stuff to take with me.

i dont want to rehome them, i just want to find a long term baby sitter of sorts. someone to take care of them for a few months until i can get more money to come back to where i live now and pick them up. however, i have no way to pay this potential person and my issue is who'd want to take care of 5 crabs for free?
do you think this would be a good idea? do you think i should just rehome them permanently?

this is so heartbreaking and upsetting and confusing and i just dont know what to do. any advice?
thanks in advance

You could try and see if there is anther crabber fairly close by you that could take care of your crabs until you could come get them. Maybe post in adoptions?

Do you have Facebook? You should post on our page and see if someone can help as there are a lot more people there than here: http://facebook.com/HermitCrabAssociation

I know we can place them in a home, but not many people are open to fostering. I'm the adoption coordinator, and I don't know of anyone near Chicago who might be willing to foster.

Just a thought but there are two rescue's, one in Detriot and one in Northwestern Ohio. Maybe if you contact them?

Hermit Crab Landing - Detroit - you can find them on facebook

from this site - happycrabbymama -

They are both non-profit and might be willing to work something out with you and that might be a doable quick drive.

i've been thinking about it a lot because i love my crab babies
but if i leave them in someone else's care and pick them up later, its still a 12 hour drive and i dont want to stress them out that much. its not necessary on them and i would hate for them to die while in transit or when i get back to where i'd be living then.

it's a super super hard decision but i know it's what's best for them. i'll just have to rehome them permanently. :c

I'm sorry :-(
You are making a really hard choice and you should be applauded for making one with the crabs best interests in mind.

Agree. A very hard decision, but you are making it selflessly. Good on you, you are a true crabber!

:( I wish you could take them with you! I bought my Strawberry hermit crab in Denver, CO and drove him 720 back home. He tanked it just fine. I put him in a small enclosure with lots of sand/water, and tried not to bother him the rest of the trip. So they'll definitely make it. He showed no signs of stress at all. But I'm not expert and I don't want to tell you to do it, and then it end badly :( I would feel awful.

Good luck to you and your crabs! Whatever happens, happens and it will work out! :luck::
