Moving with crabs

i use a large critter keeper and in the winter i place it on the floor under the foot heater and regulate the temp that way.

I will be moving soon as well. The problem is, my move is much longer than any posted here. I will be moving about 1200 miles. This means 1-3 overnight stays. I have 4 PPs in a 20L (a med, md/lrg, lrg, and jumbo.) How should I go about transporting them and what should I do with them overnight when I need to be in the hotels?

while my move did not take days- it did take 15 hours........and then several more for them before they got in the tank.........

Since its just a 20L I would just take the tank in the hotel with you where you can control the temp better. When I moved that was one tank I left in tact- I took the hermies out but left it- I imagine if they were in there it would be ok but I would even go as far as putting them in containers inside the tank during the travel hours -- you might want a bigger tank with those sizes once you settle down if you TRULY have a jumbo he cant possibly be happy in a 20L

As I posted before, I will be doing a long distance drive soon with my 4 boys in their 20L. I am worried a bit about my large PP though. I watched him shell swap two nights ago and saw that he has a very large molt sac. Should I ISO him for the trip in anticipation of his molt, or should I leave him in the tank with the others? (btw I have not had any molt violence with this crew)

how long til you move? Any other signs of pre-molt? Normally I would leave them be but maybe if you see more as time progresses you may want to ISO

He seems to be acting normal other than the molt sac. He has not spent much time digging/eating/drinking (at least no more than usual for him.) He also seems to have about the same energy level. The move will be within the next 2-3 weeks.

Just watch if nothing changes then I would keep put......

I am moving permanently to Connecticut and I have a long way to travel with my crabs. I will be shipping all of my stuff in one of those giant PODS tha tyou load up. I will be flying myself on an airplane. I have a 10 gallon glass tank with 3 crabs. What should I do? Should the tank go in the shipping POD and be there for 2 days? How can I take them on an airplane. Is it even allowed? Help please.

The move went well. I picked up a few rescue micro/tiny guys a few days prior. I may have lost 1 of those to PPS (or hes molting no smell and hes been in the same place/position for days now) but other than that everyone is fine.

To Turp:
Do you mean put the tank on the POD with the crabs in it?? Thats a definate no-go. I just got my POD from my move and not only had many things shifted in it but it was COLD in there. When I was planning my move I looked into flying with them and what I was told by most of the airlines that flew out of my area was that they did not have any rule in their system about hermit crabs and some were ok with them while others had a strict dog/cat only rule. If I were you I would call the 800 numbers for the airlines you are considering and find out what their policy is on hermits. When you find one that will let you bring them just take them in the plane with you in a KK.

Hi! Question:

Due to certain circumstances, I may be moving for a while soon; how long, I don't know. I live in Ohio and would be driving to Georgia. I have a very heavy 10 gallon tank and 4 small hermies. However, two of them are new ones I brought home a couple weeks ago and they haven't come up yet. I don't know if they're molting, destressing, or have passed away. Another one just went down the other day- she just recently molted, so I don't think she'd be molting again already..
If I do need to go to Georgia, and my two crabs haven't come up yet, what should I do? I'd be real afraid of having to dig them up..!

I have a small/medium-sized Critter Carrier, but for my four crabs and all their things, it'd be pretty cramped inside.

I will be moving from to California the first week of July, and will be traveling by train. I have 4 Hermit Crabs, three are sort of small and my other one is a little bigger and can be a bit mean. What cage is best for me to have them in? I thought about a wire cage, so they can get some air, but I don't know. I think a small cage would be good to use since I will be on a train. Any ideas?

Frankly... I move my hermies in their 10gal every Friday.
My parents are divorced and we go week-by-week. In the car I hold the tank on my lap to ensure it doesn't slide around (and the hermies don't either!)
I have supplies at both houses, so we're well equipped.
Sometimes when we're driving, the crabs will peek out and see what's going on, but that's it.

So glad to see this thread. I will most likely be moving from DE to MT in may/june for 6 months. I have a 20L with 12 pps. I love the idea of the rubbermaid with a smaller one inside, then it would be easier to take into the hotel with us than the 20. It will be me and 3 kids and a dog, kids ages 2,5 and 7. So I will have my hands full. But my husband will be deploying and all our family is in MT so I can't stand to stay here alone and I don't want to leave my crabbies either. I still have a while to put together a perfect plan for things. So I was thinking of having the big rubbermaid set up so that I can place my light/heat hood on the top. I am thinking of cutting a hole big enough for the hood, attaching plexiglass in that area for the hood to sit on, so I am not melting anything. Then I would just use the rubbermaid as their home for the 6 months before the move back. It is about 2200 miles of driving. And about 6 days driving depending on the kids moods. If I have my sis or mom come drive back with me I can make better time.

I'm transporting one small PP in a KK, and I was just wondering where would be the best place to put it? I would love to put it in my lap, but seeing as I'm driving that would be a bad idea... Should I put it on the floor of the front seat, on the front seat buckled in, or in the back on the floor between the front seat and the back? Also, how many towels should I wrap around it?

I would put it on the floor in the back with a hot water bottle or some type of heat pack tucked inside the towels. Depending on the size your towels are, I would say one or two would be fine.

If you put it on the floor in the front, the heater would blow on it too much. Driving with it on your lap definitely sounds pretty uncomfortable and if you have to stop suddenly, you could be injured.
