Our Cavipes are actually Violas
I think it's one of those things where a supplier mixes them in with a shipment of PPs, other than straws I don't think any exotics are ordered on purpose.
I just want speices buddies for the exotics I have. If I could order a cavi or viola online I'd do it in a heartbeat, and I would gladly pay the shipping, it's got to be cheaper overall than the gas I spend driving to petstores looking for them.
Someone should find a way to get exotics and humainly ship them online, I think many of us who don't have an ethical problem with overnight shipping would pay for them. Wouldn't that be a nitch market?
However it seems like less people are selling crabs online instead of more. For those with inhumain shipping practices fine, but.....
I have a feeling PPS may be driving them out of business. A lot of those companies have a gaurentee, if the crab is lost to PPS the company refunds them in full, but the company is still out overnight shipping that they can't get back. I wish crabagepatch sold Indos that weren't jumbos.

I think some C.violascens ( that had already been imported to the U.S. for years ) has been misidentified as C.cavipes due to the fire-red color of their antennae.
Here in Indonesia, most small / juvenile C.violascens are in totally fire-red color and as they grow older, they will get more purplish or bluish tint on their limbs.

The color variation of C.violascens is similar to that of coconut crabs ( depending on their diet and probably age ).
I believe that the C.cavipes are always brown or black ( never red ).

I'm almost sure that this one is a C.violascens - since it has no visible "stitch" mark (stridulatory ridge) on the BP (like that on rug, straws, E', CC, or Okinawan). The second lower segments of each walking leg are also longer that the lowest ones ( it's typical to Violets ).tonycoenobita wrote: I'm not sure about this one ... perhaps it's an E'.

I can gaurantee that the brown one is not an E. The back-left-leg segment has the cav/brevi/viola twist to it. Very different from the E's. Also, E's do not have the large antenna bases that this crab has. Between the three choices, my vote is for cav.
The purple one is definitely a viola though.
