Thanx SuperTom and Daethian, for bringing these pix to these good folks' attention. Although I'm still a bit wary of identifying any crabs, these pictures (after some study) will be quite an education for me.

I wouldn't mind seeing comparison pix of the back leg, which I have read can be distinctive. Also, maybe a full body shot of a stereotypical example of each.

AS IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE ENOUGH...LOL...

Thanx again...

Question for SuperTom

Post by Guest » Thu Mar 18, 2004 7:22 am

Hi Tom...

What kind of hermit crab is "Trunks"? I'm still trying to figure out what kind of hermies I have and they both look most similar to the pictures of Trunks that I saw.

Thanks,
Tiffany

Don't forget CrabbySue, SunnyKrab, & ed-d. They provided most of the photos.

Rugs are the only species with the sword like leg right? I tried to ID all my crabs yesterday and all exept the two that are buried seem to have a flat leg. I assumed they are ruggies

Yes, that's true but I find it tricky to go by the legs sometimes. I usually rule out other breeds first like straws, PPs, and brevs by their color, and Es by the type and yellow color of their eye stalks. Then I look for the typical pattern that shows nicely on Kermit's big pincher - they all have it even though it might be a little more pale or different in color. Last I look at the stitches/ tire marks on the front of the big claw - they are usually wider and more visible on rugs than on the other breeds (cavs and PPs don't have them at all).

I saw the stiches on HermiMom's Kermit but I cant really see them on my crabbies. Do some ruggies have them and others dont? Or am I just really bad at this ID stuff?

I don't know if u are looking at the right thing (stitches) because they are not showing really well on the above pic except the lower 2. Does anybody have a better pic of those???
Here is Triton and he has non because he is a cav: Image
