Our Cavipes are actually Violas
OK, I am a born skeptic! However, I am coming around to the idea that I have a c. violascens, not a c. cavipes. My crab in question is "Miss September" in the 2006 calendar on Cafe Press. Here is another shot of "Fawn":

I have a chocolate brown c. compressus, but the eyes of *Kathy*'s crab do not look like an E, nor do the base of the antennae. Kathy, can you give us some different angles of that dark brown crab? Eye stalks and left rear walking leg, for example?

Scarlett is certainly NOT an E!ckbythesea wrote:

I really must confess. BOTH pictures are of the SAME crab! The "purple" shot is shortly after her last molt. She came up a very bright lavendar color, but soon turned back to brownish-red. Her BP is a classic stiped Cav, and she does have firey-red antenas.
Here are a few more pics of Scarlett at various angles:

SNEAKY!!
Did you post the same crab pix on purpose? Or was it a whoops moment?
Very interesting though.
I can see how the crab owners who do not have E's would consider that an E though. Hehe... It's like me, before I ever SAW a real Ruggie I was always getting E's and Ruggie's confused. Doesn't mean I still can't get them confused now.
BEAUTIFUL crabs though. All of you!

The reason? After I read this post, I was fairly sure that Scarlett was a Viola ~ Especially since she had come up from that molt, well, PURPLE! I never new that such a species exsisted, but I do remember reading that there is a theory that very few, if any, TRUE Cavs make it to the USA.
SOOOOOOOOOOO.....when will there be a seperate catagory for them in the crab caresheets & species ID sections??? it seems that most of us have Violas.....not Cavs!

It's okay Tony. It's VERY hard to ID crabs by photo's alone.tonycoenobita wrote:It is because the photo are too small for me to see the characteristic of both of them.......

I've made tons of mistakes on crab ID's and shell ID's!! Sometimes it's ridiculous!
