All rugs have them. However, the small and lighter ones are hard to make out. You can sometimes feel them with your thumbnail (if you have nice crabbies)!

Here's a crabbie with the stitches on the front big pincer, he's a medium though.

What color is the big pincer? If you can't find the stitches, and they don't have the pattern like in the pic, but are orange/brown, they maybe Es.

I have nice crabbies with purple pinchers. Sometimes the tip will be white and fade to purple. I'll go try your idea thamster. Thanks.

I may have missed this somewhere in this topic but are the c. clypeatus (the last row on the picture) pp/purple pinchers?

Yup, that's the 'nickname' for C. clypeatus.

SuperTom, you did a fabulous job with the descriptions of the species and with the species comparison pics. This will really be helpful for a lot of folks. 8)

I know it's supposed to be a guide to exotic hermit crabs, but I wish you had included a description of PP's. Your description of Indos starts off with "looks like a PP but NOT". It would be good to see the differences (and similarities) to be able to tell which is which.

u can see the diff in the pic :D ... granted they don't look that similar when closely examinin em.. but they do at first glance..

o and it's very likely ppl have PP's already (cuz they're most common) so they can just look at em first hand..

True, Tom. I have at least one PP myself, probably 9. I was just hoping for some sort of description that would note the differences. Sure, I can look at my crabs, but if I don't know what I'm looking for then it's hard to know what I'm looking at.

I mean, looking at your species comparison pic (nicely done too!) it's hard to see anything in the PP pics that tells me they're NOT Indos. Except that because you described what the Indos eyes look like, I can see that the PP's eyes are different. Without that description I probably wouldn't have noticed a difference.

Basically, it comes down to my lack of experience. :?

I'm so confused, I just learned there were more than two different kinds. You know you guys are really helpful, I thought I had a clue, but really I didn't

Tom thanks to you I have been able to ID my crabs. Not all of them have been IDed yet but I know that my little newbie no name is a ruggie and that Tyedye is an indo and I believe crabby is a PP. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS LIST TO:!: :D :D

Just tossing in some pics of Bashee, Tom tried to help ID her last year.. but we all didn't really had that much exotic crabs. We're about 99% sure she's a rug. So here are some pics just so you guys can take a peek too!

I forgot this one... it's real fuzzy, but it clearly shows the different coloring on the back leg.. and trust me, that leg is oddly thin as described ;p

Bashee's a rug. That big pincer pattern (with the black stripe going down the middle) is indicative of rugs.
