Advice on Hermit crab networks

Post by Tarn » Thu May 07, 2015 1:00 am

Hi Everyone,
I just joined a facebook group called Hermit Crab owners. I know that everyone wants to create great environments for their crabs and I am so open to advice but I was jumped on by a woman as soon as I posted a picture of some of my crabs, not my tat. She immediately assumed that I had not read any care sheets or had any advice. I said that I was working off the care info on this forum and she said that it was all bad.
Is there a friendly FB group that allows for learning and engagement without being pushy and mean?
I would love to keep learning about these babies as well as connecting with other crabbers.
Thanks Tarn :)

Yikes! :(

Try this group, they will check you out before approval just to make sure you're from Australia and not a spammer: https://www.facebook.com/groups/AussieCrabCare/
You've got Aussie crabs, so for species specific and for local info, they're really the only ones who can give you guidance, aside from the few Australian members we have here like AussieJJdude.

If you just want to talk hermits, the HCA has it's own FB discussion group. :) As a bonus there are at least three of Aussie members who have joined, and they're three of the most experienced keepers out there. (Sue, Jarrod, and Nat)

Unfortunately, there are a few Facebook groups who are like that. There was a huge fight on two of them because someone posted pictures of their crabs on carpet (you know, like a lot of people do for a quick picture) and I've left both of them. They made the person cry. It's very unfortunate that people feel superior to others and can't just be polite.

I noticed you had mentioned the Hermit Crab Paradise forum on the comments there. I've no experience with them but I think that's what they checked out (and were calling "bad")? Though there are some small differences in the HCO care guides and ours too.

I only recently joined the HCO to try to keep in touch with those I worked with at the baseball game. I definitely don't agree with some of their crabbers approach to new members or different methods. Also, sometimes it seems others feel like they can't offer their own advice or experience but instead tag others to answer?? If that's how it is and not me misunderstanding, I find it sad. I've kind of noticed they occasionally panic over misunderstood information too. (for example they had a lot of members cutting off the sisal/rubberwood bridge from their hanging coconuts because one person claimed it was made from Chinese fir - though a quick search clearly shows it is indeed rubberwood - which in turn led to a panic about rubberwood). It's definitely been an experience this last week (two?).

*This is all only my personal opinion based on the very short time I've been a member there*

Let's just say there's a reason the Hermit Crab Association is the only forum (on any topic - not just crabs) that I've stuck with for so long. People can be cruel and life's too short to deal with it if I don't have to.

From what I understand the Aussie group Wode linked is a great group. And the HCA Facebook group seems to have a decent amount of members chatting too. :)

I left the HCO group because they are very rigid and if you have differences of opinion or offer advice, they tag admins for everything, and I have gotten into an argument with an admin over whether or not you should dig up a crab buried in calcium sand. Their stance in that case was that you should wait and let it molt. They also say that HCA guidelines are outdated as far as space requirements. I feel like the admins here have years of experience with many crabs and have been through a lot of trial and error. I know they have the crabs best interest at heart but I do not think there is 1 exact right way to be a hermit crab owner. I like the fact that HCA allows members to offer opinions and alternative solutions and recognize that not everything works all the time for everyone.

This! I feel the same way. There isn't always just one right way. Plus, I think it should be encouraged for all to share their opinion and experiences. Without that, I don't think we would have come as far in crabbing as we have! A lot of our info is based on years of trial and error.

I'm confused about our guidelines on space requirements being outdated (unless they're basing this on our old guidelines). From what I see (though I'll check again), our only main difference is starter tanks. We say a 10g is a fine starter tank but upgrading will be necessary. They feel a minimum of 29g I think. I'm pretty sure our recommendations for large/jumbo crabs are larger than theirs (but again I'd have to double check).

I believe they go with a flat 10 gallons of space, even for a dime sized crab. It was explained to me that their guideline is that people start with a full sized tank and stock it as if the crabs were fully grown so the owner never has to upgrade. I personally disagree with that, since the average length of ownership is 2 years - those that keep with it invest more, but those that don't won't have wasted money on a pet that isn't for them, and the crabs will usually grow slowly enough that they generally won't be overcrowded in that time. (The joys of being adoption coordinator for years, I see more then I want. :? )
