Chia seeds and mites

Post by hermie2013 » Mon Oct 26, 2015 2:59 pm

I was looking at old threads because I find it fun. I read that someone had chia plant growing in the tank. I would love to have a real plant in the tank. I use fake because: I read something a while back that you should avoid live plants because they attract mites quicker? I have chia seeds and would like to try to plant one and see how it goes

I've heard of people using chia seeds! I have no experience with either using them or mites... if your crabs don't have mites, or come with eggs on them then I don't believe they can get them...nor would chia seeds attract any. Maybe they were referring to other critters that may come with some plants? Or food mites maybe if you let them decay.

Crab-safe and pesticide free live plants are fine, though crabs will eat/rip/destroy them pretty quickly. Sprout them in organic soil or cocofiber, or if you're buying potted plants be sure to replant them and let them grow out for a few months before introducing them to the crabitat. Someone else may come along with better soil recommendations.

Here's one thread: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=101862&hilit=live+plants&start=15. Try searching "live plants" for more.

I planted some chia seeds right into the soil a couple about a week ago. They grow fast and are great.
