Petco Getting Out of the Hermit Crab & Reptile Business?

Post by Crabinski » Tue Nov 24, 2015 8:21 pm

I had the BooDog in for grooming at Petco today and her groomer, Jennifer, asked me how my mice and hermit crabs were doing (crabs fine but lost my favorite mouse, Tara, on Sunday :( ). She then told me that that particular Petco was going to stop selling hermit crabs and reptiles because they were not "money makers" due to low sales; however, she didn't know if that was a store-by-store decision or a corporate fiat affecting all stores. Does anyone here work for Petco or know someone who does who can confirm this? It's been my experience that Petco usually has dreadful set-ups for their crabs so the decision to stop selling them would be a blessing -- of course, that would eliminate another possible source to get new crabs so a mixed blessing, I guess.

My guess is store by store - my local Petco closed and reopened about four years ago and all they have now is a couple of rodents like mice, hamsters, guinea pigs and ferrets, bettas and feeder goldfish. Not even the fish department survived the downsize.

Sorry to hear about Tara.

Sorry for your loss. And a pet owners near me has already downsized there reptile section. They haven't had live reptiles for sale in a couple years and now they don't really sell any reptile supplies. They have plenty of cat and dog items and some small rodent things. I think with all the other pet stores around my area like pet supplies plus, pets mart, pet land, jacks pets and a fish store they had to focus on what there sales were doing.

My PETCO is not really even looking at them. In the "fancy" hermit crab tank there is usually a lot of crabs. I went there days ago and saw that there we're barely any and one was dead! There are technically none is the native crab tank.
Sorry about Tara :(
