Warning, dogs may love your stash of hermie food

Post by pixellator » Tue Jan 26, 2016 12:55 am

I have a border collie/ aussie shepherd mix who is extremely smart and dexterous. I have accidentally left the container of hermie food next to the tank, where the dog could smell it and reach it. In the past 8 months or so, she has TWICE stolen the entire container of food, opened the lid by biting it off, and eaten all the food. It's "All living things Variety Diet". This food looks like a powder with mealworms in it. A 4 ounce plastic jar costs about 9 or 10 dollars.

Of course, this is not the only food hermies are getting, but they really like it. I'm also providing fresh foods and testing their likes and dislikes.

But anyway, my dog has also eaten an entire container of my fish food treat of dried worms.

So, I've forged a new habit of storing the fish and hermie food on the highest shelf in the kitchen.

Yikes! It could get pretty pricey to put the dog on a crab diet! Better lock up the canister or he'll be getting into it next!

This is why I keep my hermie food in the fridge.
Currently the caretaker for:
Six hermies in 37G bow front, and two more in a ten-gallon tank.

I build websites, and blog about ebooks.

I like that idea, too. Do hermit crabs care if their dried worms are cold?
I've been better about storing their dried food way up high so the dog can't get it.

I keep mine in a plastic organizer with three drawers and wheels, and also a plastic shoebox with lid. Keeps the cats out.

I frequently have wet foods like river shrimp or peanut butter. And I keep mine in a drawer which is divided into 4 areas so I can rotate the food.
