Weird Glob on Crab

Post by DancingCorgi » Mon May 23, 2016 7:40 pm

There recently has been a weird clear glob on one of my crabbies. He/she is an ecuadorian and seems to be acting normally (digging, eating, water, etc). This blob is only on one side and he does not seem to have any limbs missing (thought at first maybe it was a gel limb?)
Here are some pics.
Any idea what it might be?

Hello @DancingCorgi! Someone can correct me if I am wrong but that looks like a molt sack. It's literally a pouch that a crab uses to store food for when it molts. (It's probably going to molt soon) Also, do you have a lot of shells larger than this? This crab is in a REALLY small shell and usually the molt sacks don't stick out. Make sure you give it lots to choose from! Please update us on how your crab is doing!

OH thank you!
And yeah his shell is really small I don't know why he won't pick a new one. I have tons of shells around the tank and plenty are his size, I've even seen him checking several out (feeling around inside etc). But he keeps staying in the tiny one :(

E's are notorious for staying in seriously small shells. They tend to run away as fast as possible when threatened, as opposed to PP's who hunker down and duck 'n' cover. Sometimes they look like they just have little caps on their bottoms.

It does look like a molt sack. When was its last molt?

Yep, looks like a molt sac. He may molt soon, he may not. Some crabs seem to have a molt sac almost constantly. And they often can have them for weeks or months before actually digging down.

At the top of the thread listing there's a small box with an asterisk that says "New Topic." Click on that.
