Classroom Crabs Vacation Cottage

Post by MrTeacherDude » Mon Nov 07, 2016 8:49 pm

So, our classroom crabs will be coming home with me around Thanksgiving and staying until after the new year. I'm using my old 35G Hex, so I hope they will be OK together for the month they are here! I have a Molter down (went down 10/18), so I hope he's up by the time to bring them home! Plus, I don't want my lamps/UTH on that long without anyone there...

Any ideas on what I should do if he's NOT up in the next 2-3 weeks?

You can't bring the whole tank home from school? Or do you have access to go into the school during the break?
That is a cool tank :D

Well, it would be hard to move my 75G. The school will be locked up tight for Christmas break. Except the gym, where I will be having basketball practice. The rest of the school will have alarms set, and I am not privy to those codes. We have another teacher who has a bearded dragon and gerbils and she was told to take them home over the break, so I'm ASSUMING it would be the same for me...

I loved using my 35G Hex. There was so much up room.

We have fall break here and I had two tanks going for that reason. 1 molten was down so I moved the 2 others into the new tank and took them. I left the Monterey with plenty of dried food and birth waters then wrapped the tank bottom and sides in heat material...the thermal material oven gloves are made out of. That seemed to keep the temp up so all I needed was a 50 watt running. For humidity, I pick a plastic container with hemp rope and water in it. The hemp absorbed most of the water and slowly released it. Humidity stayed at 83%. I live in utah so it's very dry here.

If your conditions are stable and lights are on a timer, you can leave them for Christmas break.

I've had to be gone for up to two weeks with no crab help.

If they have deep water dishes, and plenty of dried/dehydrated food left out, they will be ok.

These crabs go into the forests in their natural habitats and species like PP's and Indos have been observed in areas where there is little access to water. They use puddles from rain to fill their shells.

Obviously you aren't going to leave them with stagnant dirty water.

Fresh waters, deep pools, dried and dehydrated food, stable conditions.

They'll be okay :)
