do flashlights hurt hermit crabs' eyes?

Post by sushi » Fri Mar 24, 2017 8:52 pm

my tank is mostly in the dark, and i use my phone flashlight to look at them. sometimes they start backing away, so i'm wondering if the light hurts them at all? :(

To be honest, I don't know if the flashlight hurts their eyes. I'm sure it's bright. I do know that they are a prey animal, and being that we are much larger than them, it is their instinct to be frightened of us. ;)

I imagine if you were to shine it directly in their eyes, then it could hurt.... But honestly we know little about their eyes, and their anatomy, that its really inconclusive. I would just shine it over the tank, not at them in general... Or look at getting a small LED light so that way they can have a regular pattern of light and dark.

I have a moon over my crabitats. It lights up my tanks beautifully. Just enough so that I can see them.

Hi,

I use a flashlight with a red LED, so called night vision light. It seems to bother mine a lot less than a regular light.

I have moon glo bulbs at night. They work well but you can't tell who is who without using a flashlight. I use a flash light when I'm being noisy, but I put my hand over the light end in a way that little light gets through. (Letting the light peek between my fingers.) My crabs are used to this and never run away!
