Is my crab molting? Why did my crabs die?

When I was about 13, my mom bought my sister and I hermit crabs from a beach gift shop. Now that I'm 16 and have researched more about hermies, I realize how much care they really require (and how horrible those gift shops are). Anyway, 2 of my 3 crabs passed away about 2 months ago for unknown reasons (they have been apparently healthy for the 3 years we've had them). Knowing that hermit crabs are social, I bought another crab and he quickly died as well. What happened? My first theory is that we didn't have enough substrate to molt. My mom didn't understand how important the substrate is, so they only had about 2-3 inches of coconut fiber, but that doesn't explain how the new one died so quickly! We also had mites a few months before they died, but we got completely rid of them! Another idea is that they starved to death, because we only fed them store-bought pellets and maybe those were malnourishing? However, we've used only better supplies the longer we've had them!!
I've since moved in with my dad, and was able to buy more coconut fiber. The day after I put an extra 6 inches in, my single crab almost immediately buried himself in it. It's been about a week since then and I haven't seen him! Should I dig him up or is he molting?? By the way NONE of my crabs have ever molted in the 3 yrs we've had them!! Please help! Thank you.
