HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Okay, this is my journal for pictures, messages, and day to day updates that are shareable. I decided it would be nice to let everyone see my tank without having to reply, but instead just read the message for the day, and view the pictures

Here’s the start of the journal.




Sorry for the annoying glare, the window steals the show.

I started this crab jungle in February, and have been loving it more and more as the time goes on, it’s super peaceful.
I like to simulate the natural occurrences of the wild, such as weather changes, food falling from trees or vegetation, and temperature.

I made some changed to my tote, thought you’d like to see it



It’s supposedly going to contain any Texas related adoptions.
I have roughly 10,000 isopods, and a baby texas spotted lizard in there!

Are those all plastic plants ? In the tote to ??
And what size is the aquarium one ? Just wondering

Lizards can live with hermit crabs? I did not know that.

Probably should have asked sooner, but...

Wouldn’t a lizard from the Texas area require drier conditions than tropical hermit crabs prefer?

Does Texas adoptions mean for hermit crabs? Sorry, this post sounds rude, I think it is for hermit crab adoptions.

They really shouldn't. Their needs are often very different, saltwater should not be offered to reptiles, it'll be hard to make sure both are eating properly, and they can very well harm each other!

Not just drier, but hotter as well! Most desert reptiles require a very hot basking spot. Too much humidity can lead to respiratory infections. UVB has to be spot on as well, they need a lot of it and it has to be set up properly in relation to basking.

If the tote contains roughly 10,000 isopods that would be overwhelming for a lizard. Even though a lizard would eat isopods...
Reptiles also do need heat for basking. The tanks look pretty. The hermit tank looks like it has a lot of food that would go to waste. A whole carrot would be better in an isopod tank - and be better if cut up (IMO).

Woah, I haven’t been online lately to check this thread!
I need to address everyone’s confusion due to my lack of specification.

Firstly, I took the lizard out, he was collected wild from my yard, and is actually a Mediterranean Gecko, and they are quite common around my parts. He was not bothered at all, he took care of the population really well by eating the new baby isopods.

Second, I do not have hermies in this tote, to this day I do not. I set it up for a rescue tote, it’ll hold and crabs that I adopt or rescue.

Lastly, that carrot was in the crab tank for a few days, and they took some reasonably sizes chunks out of it. When they were done, and didn’t seem to care anymore, I sliced it into chunks, and threw it into the tote where the isopods could eat it!

Hopefully that answered your questions.

Oh, and lizards or any reptile really, cannot live with hermit crabs.
Wodesorel is correct, the saltwater will hurt them in many ways, and that’s not a path we need to go down right now. I will go ahead and make another post to update you all on what has happened within this past week

I recently took on two, soon to be three, new crabs.
They are my younger brother’s, and we are introducing them into my setup due to his having complications that will need fixing. They have already improved.

I am fostering Pixie, Ivory, and Seymour for a while
The others don’t mind a bit, and they are doing great as well, very active.



I got an AcuRite gauge, and that is helping tremendously!
They also got their wheel back, they are accepting that again too
