If someone went to the coast of Florida, would it be okay to put the crabs back on the beach if they didn't want them anymore? Is that a kind way to re-home a crab, or is it cruel?.

You might introduce a sickness or something. Once they're captive, they have to stay captive.

that's too bad. But what if they were just shipped off the coast of Florida and you wanted to take them back home? I probably wouldn't buy them for that purpose, but I was just wandering if that would work.

Hermit crabs in Florida aren’t really a part of the industry afaik. They are collected from the Caribbean and other areas around the world and shipped all over.

Never release any wild animal into the wild, because it is typically not where they came from in the first place, and you run the risk of introducing a species that should not live there, or it may quickly die due to the incorrect resources of that area.
There are laws for releasing animals into the wild, some states have different laws for different animals.

I think it would be cruel, I know they were once wild but any time in captivity they are spent being fed and taken care of. They might not be able to find food like they once used to or even being used to being fed all the time, might not be able to forage enough in the wild like they once used to. Plus like others have said about releasing them with certain laws, introducing a species that’s not supposed to be there, etc.. If they don’t want them, see if they can find someone who would be willing to take them. Just googling “releasing pets into the wild” there’s a lot more scientific evidence for you to look at than just some peoples opinions. I hope I am not sounding rude, as I am not trying to.

Don't worry, I know it was helpfully meant. I think I'll look that up, like you said. Thanks!
