Hello everybody! So yesterday I got a free tank! The tank is filthy. Can I bleach it safely? Image

You can use 1 part bleach to 10 parts water and make sure the tank is well rinsed afterwards.

You can also use vinegar and water.

If you bleach you can actually soak it in tap water afterwards and use a dechlorinator to make sure the bleach is fully removed. Common trick for cleaning plastic stuff quickly from habitats.

I've found cleaning ammonia to work the best on grimey tanks, and it also sterilizes, but it smells horrendous and you have to be careful about gassing yourself.

For really stuck on water spots, dirt, and and dry algae, water and a razor blade works magic. If you scrub with a pad it can scratch the glass from trapped sand and rock debris, learned that the hard way.

Thank you! I planned on cleaning this outside because filthy. Will that be okay if I use ammonia?

Yeah. Its probably best to clean outside with products like ammonia and bleach, or at least in a well ventilated area.
