We were cleaning the tank during the day and they crabs were sleeping under a hollow rock hiding area. They sleep there frequently and we can’t to clean out the under area. When we removed the den, they freaked out. One of them also came out of their shell trying to back itself into a corner and went into the desk water dish. They won’t leave a corner of the tank. Another climbed over one and has climbed the net we use. They seem in distress, at least the one will the shell freak out. They all scattered in a panicked way. I feel so bad.
The one on the net has settled and is sleeping on the net. One is facing the glass in a corner, and another one seems to be wandering. Is this normal? Should we have not removed their hiding area to clean? It was impossible to pick them up gently without moving the rock because of the smaller opening.

Re: Freaked out while cleaning
You probably just startled them. Not all hermit crabs like having people around.
