Post by crabs_lex » Fri Jan 22, 2021 3:59 pm

i’m getting two new glass lids for my tank but my center brace on it is broken
so i am looking for the best way to fix it because i don’t want to have any unnecessary fumes in the crab tank

I'm wondering if using silicone safe for fish aquariums would work. Just a thought.

Yes, aquarium safe silicone is perfect to use. I use it a lot. But, make sure you use it on an empty tank, let it dry for a few days. The fumes are harmful to crabbies.

Do you have another tank that they could temporarily live in for 5-7 days til the silicone dries? If they are all up of course, never dig up crabbies.

Can you wrap popsicle sticks on the top and bottom of the crack/break with jute twine or hemp string? Like board supports wrapped in string?
Or thin cardboard wrapped with jute or hemp instead of popsicle sticks?

How bad is the brace broken?

When I used you ride dirt bikes and would snap a fender off or split it I would use zip ties to fix it! Basically drill a hole on each side of the crack and zip tie it together! Add several zip ties in a row to use them like stitches! For additional strength use some type of plastic as a splint! When you are drilling be sure you have a good bit, and lay something in the tank, like a towel to catch any plastic shavings!

I always thought the zip tie stitches looked cool if done neatly! It's amazing what you can actually do with them!

i ended up using something called epoxy glue i believe
i don’t think the fumes are good for the crabs so i took plastic wrap and used it as a temporary cover to the tank and i wove it under the brace and kinda taped it so it was out out the way and sealed
then i took double sided tape to get the end of the brace to stick where it should have and i prepared to epoxy
then i just took a popsicle stick and put epoxy in the cracks
it says it needed 24 hours to dry
it smelt pretty bad so i left a window open a bit
the next morning the smell was gone and the day after that i put my new lid on

i can post a pic later if u want but there isn’t much to see lol and i don’t have a before pic but you will be able to see right where it was broken

the whole part of the center brace there where you see the clear stuff was completely snapped
the other stuff you see is the tape
(forget the previous post where i said it was double sided i forgot i just used regular tape)
i folded it hot dog style and put half on the tank wall and the other folded half went underneath the brace
the glue works great it just dries in a big clump so as long as you don’t mind seeing it it works perfect
