I saved a crabs life! Kinda

Post by hermitsrus1966 » Wed Jan 05, 2022 1:25 pm

So, my mom posted a picture of my largest hermit crab on Facebook asking if anyone had any extra shells they wanted to get rid of or sell in the size I need for largest crab. A local person see's my moms post about shells and pm my mom on messenger asking if we had any extra shells that we could spare for there hermit crab. They had one him at the fair (which our fair was in late July this year) and they did not have any shells for him. We did and got measurements and packed about 7 shells or so, and then we started asking if they needed anything else while also educating them. Mind you there crab was living in a painted shell, had no saltwate, no humidity, and was living in a tiny one gallon or less plastic container. We started talking and one thing led to another. I got together a huge bag of food with freeze dried products and dry products, seaweed, oats, honey, oak leaves, worm castings, peas, green beans, kangaroo, beef, pork, turkey, shrimp, etc. Anything I could spare without taking away from my own hermit crabs well being. In the end they got a bag of shells, food dishes, coco hut, 10 gallon glass aquarium plus a lid, food, saltwater mix (enough instant ocean to make a couple gallons), plastic shower caddy, cholla logs, 50lb bag of playsand, plastic mesh (to make latters for pools and such), and one dry brick of eco earth. We gave it all free of charge and then attempted to describe proper care and how to setup the tank properly. We wen't home thinking we probably confused them and stressed them more than anything, but to our surprise later that night they sent pictures asking if they were setting up the tank right, and the finishing product of the tank. The final product looked amazing, and way better than my first setup, they we so kind and eager to help their crab. I thought they would not take us seriously as I am only a teenager and I am sure we sounded crazy at first, buf they immediately wen't through with it. Then later that night they sent more pictures of their crab in ots new shell as it changed immediately, once their hermit changed pants they took out the painted shell.
I leaft them the original Eco Earth paper (that says the brand and what its made of), the instant ocean box with instructions, sites where we get our shells, buisness card from MT Pet Emporium (it is the place where I get some of my dried hermit crab food, and the owner is beyond kind), Crab Street Journal webpage ( sent via text), and this sites link and name that way they can find proper info and ask questions if they don't feel like asking us.

Aw heck yeah, this is wholesome. 😊 Great job! I believe in paying it forward whenever you can, because kindness now begets kindness in the future.

These pics are the before and after. The plastic white tiny( but looks quite large in the pics) plastic thing with netting over it is his original tank. They did not send any pictures of their actual setup in the plastic container but when we wen't to their house it was tiny, it had a plastic bottom of a bottle as a water dish, a couple inches of dry dirt. However some positive things about their setup is they onky gave him purified drinking water, they had around 2 inches of dry substrate, and a kind of deep water dish. I am also not trying to hate on them by any means, they are genuinely nice people just did not have the knowledge not to mention the closest pet store is at least a good 30 to 45 minutes away if not more. Where we live (and they live as they were local people) we are very secluded and limited, not to mention are winters are extremely harsh as we have below 0 temps often and lots of snow.

Nvm I got it to work! The before and after pics as well as the shell the crab chose. I gave them mostly mexican turbo, snake skin turbo, and a couple other kinds just for options and variety. In the shower caddy is dried oak leaves I have them and you can't clearly see but yes they do have both water dishes of fresh and salt. One of the water dishes is a hampster dish I got a long time ago, it is not the largest water dish but it works for now. But seriously though this to me was such a glow up amd made me so happy to see. Lastly, the writing on the pictures is them updating and asking us things. And the plastic mesh covered container is the original habitat.ImageImageImageImage
