Other Websites?

Post by C: ClareCrabOwner :) » Wed Feb 05, 2025 9:56 pm

Do any of you use multiple websites for hermit crab advice?
I've found some conflicting advice, and am not always sure which to follow. Are other sites usually reliable?

Here are some I've tried. Are they any good? Are there any other good ones you know of?

https://crabstreetjournal.org/

https://www.hermitcrabparadise.com/

https://www.vanessascrabitat.com.au/blog/

https://www.crustaceanplantation.org/

https://www.happyhermie.com.au/

https://coenobita.e-monsite.com/

http://allthingscrabby.com/

https://coenobitaspecies.com/
(This site is one of my favorites. It's really neat!)

http://hermitcrabbreeding.com/

https://lhcos.org/

https://www.hermit-crabs.com/index.html

https://www.thesprucepets.com/search?q=hermit+crab

http://www.fmrpets.com/

https://tonycoenobita.com/species_eng.htm
I had no idea there were so many species!

I'm not sure about all things crabby or coenobita species, but the LHCOS is another reputable source, and crab street journal is LHCOS's newsletter, hermit crab breeding lists hermit house, so it seems reputable, and hermit crabs.com lists the HCA, so it also seems reputable.
I love my two cool crabs Zote and Fizban.
And my cats Echo and Smudge.

You’re going to see conflicting information because different sites/care groups have different opinions on how to best take care of their crabs

Most are derived from information provided by the Epicurean Hermit, which is now defunct. The HCA is an old group, and LHCOS (and CSJ) are only slightly younger (I think). Usually groups splinter into new ones as new disagreements form and general recommendations become more conservative and extreme

Here on this forum (and our extension on Facebook) we generally recognize most valid ways of care (although we have questioned and even challenged some modern practices). We’ve been trying not be let our guides be a strict as some other guides are

Actually, the LHCOS was founded in 1999, while the HCA was founded in 2001.

Would you recommend continuing to look at several websites, and kinda just figuring out which guidelines to follow? Or should I just pick one website (such as the HCA or CSJ) and only follow their advice?
Thanks! :)

I was just curious, so I went to this website (https://www.hermit-crabs.com/) and found the owner's name (Christa Wilkin). Then I realized that she used to be the President of the HCA! She also used to own the LHC (I think). That's why I thought her website was a good source and kept citing her about sponges. Then I clicked on her member name (Christa), and noticed she got busy with other things in life, had to give up her crabs, and hasn't posted on the HCA website in a couple years. I guess she probably isn't up to date on current Hermit Crab care. Oops! Sorry about that.

Thanks for the correction, looks like I’m getting my dates mixed up. Never was the history buff

Anyways, it’s kinda up to you. I don’t agree with everything LCHOS promotes so I tend to stick to the HCA for guidance, but of course I’m an admin here so there’s bias (and maybe conflict of interest with me responding here)

Before I was an admin, like 14 1/2 years ago when I first got my crabs, I noticed that there was some conflicting advice out there. I decided that it was easiest for me to follow the advice of just one group. I liked HCA fight from the start, the people behind the advice have tons of experience, the group recognizes that there are different ways to successfully care for crabs, and I liked the casual friendly group vibe. And one of my two original crabs is still alive and doing well after all this time (the other passed away during a molt last year).
Some (if not many) of the groups say that there is only one way that things have to be, and that their way is the right way. Some of the groups and people I find annoying. Some don't use common sense. Some repeat information that has been shown to be inaccurate, and will argue things to the death, like the 5 to 1 ratio being the *best* or *only* substrate to use. Many are newer crabbers and simply don't have the experience to give advice. Some of the other groups you listed in this post for sure fall into one or more of these categories.

Thanks! I decided that I'll just stick to the HCA, occationally looking at other sites but mostly following this site's information.
This is for a couple reasons, but mostly beacuse I really like that you can ask questions here, and they are anwered quickly and respectfuly. :)
