Did I buy Rugs? Pictures included!

Post by Guest » Mon Aug 15, 2005 7:35 pm

My wife and I wanted to pick up a pair of ruggies for our tank after hearing how everyone enjoys them. The problem was, where to find them? I had remembered someone saying Petco carries them so that's the first place we tried. They had probably the best habitat set up for the crabs out of all the pet stores I've been to lately. I found a clerk to help me, but he was clueless about the different types of crabs, and their expert was on vacation that week, so I was on my own! I went by the few pictures I have seen of Ruggies and descriptions I have read. Out of all the craps they had, mostly purple pinchers, I found a pair that I felt might be Ruggies.

Here is the first:

Yea! You got Ruggies! Yea! You will love them. They are cute, fun, energetic, curious, and did I mention cute? Congrats!

Oh, and they change shell alot like PP's. Mine changed out of their painted shells within a couple of days. My E's have never changed but they are in natural shell thank Heavens.

Horray! Unfortunately these were the only two I felt could be Ruggies and of course they were in painted shells. :( I hope they change out of them soon. Do they prefer shells with a D shape like E's? Or PP type shells?

How does everyone know what type of shells they have? I've looked on those links to the right, and all they give are 'technical' names of the shells. Is there somewhere that shows pictures of "turbos" and such, so that I can tell what I have?

Thanks :D

"Tapestrys" are polished turbos.
As for Rugs and shells, they most commonly prefer turbos, but some will choose shells with elongated openings, such as Whale's Eyes and Bursa Ranas.

My first guess would have been that those are e's. They sure have the coloring of my six crabs (which i am thought were e's). What is the difference? both have stitch marks, both have tear drop eyes, they both have the same coloring. I have used the links to the right but i'm still confused.

I went by this:

http://www.hermit-crabs.com/rugosus.html

That's all I had to go on when trying to find Rugs at PETCO. If you purchased your crabs from PETCO there is a good chance you have some Rug's.

For the the biggest give away is the more slender eye stalks and that little black marking on the under side of the stalk, although that maynot be present on all Rugs. ? Also the legs on Rugs are more uniform in color, where the E's legs get darker towards the ends. Also E's have the pinstriping on their legs. Check the link above as it has pictures and descriptions.

As far as I know Rug's have similar requirements to E's, meaning they need and enjoy having saltwater available to them, as well as fresh.

Rug's are supposed to be active like E's, but more friendly or nicer, and they also enjoy checking out new shells more than E's do.

I'm proud to report 1 of my 2 Rugs ditched his painted shell for a natural one. I have a PP crab that has a different shell every time I look in there. :) He changes once or twice a day it seems.
