Has anyone read any books on hermit care and can recommend them? I am looking at maybe getting "hermit crabs for dummies". I like the Dummies series and wondered if this a good book as well.
Thanks for any input.

Honestly, why spend the money when you can come here for free? :D

While MamaZelly does have a point that you can get good info here, I will say that there may be a time when you don't have internet access and need to know something. Having a book with you may be helpful for instance, when talking about hermit crabs with a friend in the park.

To answer aquav's question, however, I do not have any books. I do believe that the Hermit Crabs for Dummies book has the HCA as a recommended link for additional information. I cannot verify the accuracy of the information in the book though.

If I am unsure of a book, I wait until a Border's coupon comes in the email. That way if it does turn out to be a waste of money, I didn't pay full price for it.

I know, I figured I can get all the info I need here and then some. But I am also a book person. I like to have quick references handy when I need them and maybe not have access to the internet. :read2:

That is what I was afraid of. I don't want to get a book that recommends improper care. I guess I may just stick with the forum. Thanks guys!

Or you could check it out at the library. If the info isn't good, you know it before wasting money buying it.

Sue Fox book is considered the best.

The founder of the HCA contributed to the Hermit Crabs for Dummies book.

I was tired last night and only gave you one author. I've read all the books that were out 2 years ago and the only one you shouldn't get is "Hermit Crab" by Neal Pronek. He suggest you can put a crab into your ice cube tray to freeze it and then put it into a guest's drink to see the guest's reaction. Ewwwwwwwwwwww
And that's just one of his many similar suggestions.

All the books that others have mentions are books I've read and think are good books for crabbers.

I also printed out the info at the Crabbage Patch site and made it into a sort of book. I find that it also has great info.

Hey, that's a good idea! I'll do that! I know the Crabbage patch has better information than any hermit crab book...

I own: Quick & Easy Hermit Crab Care
and
Hermit Crabs by Sue Fox.

I'd agree, the Sue Fox book is better. I like the pictures in both, but they both say that painted shells are OK. They have detailed pictures and information about s*e*x*ing crabs, and tell you a little bit about the hermit crabs' stages in the ocean, like zoea and glacothoe. Other than painted shells, they recommend good shells for crabs.

I like the Sue Fox book better, but not for hermit crab care, for other things like hermit crab anatomy and stuff.

Thank you all for all the info. I think I will order a few books. Now I am probably going to spend more than I originally thought...
Thanks again.

I can't believe I forgot this book:

The authors are two very dedicated crabbers and it has excellent info on general crab care and especially on nutrition, with lots of recipes for making your own crab food.
