Science Fair ,hermies?

Post by limeslide » Thu Nov 06, 2008 4:37 pm

There is going to be a science fair and i am making a demonstration of a proper hermie habitat.

I'm going to bring Kike and Bjorn ,i will be using one of those huge KKs for a temporary home.

I need some pics of hermit crabs in the wild like in their natural habitat and PPs only and a list of all the 1(?) species ,wild and domesticated, will it be alright?Kike and Bjorn are my smallest crabs that i CAN take, titan is too fragile.

Any help? And tips for keeping crabbies outside the main tank?

sounds like a really cool idea esp. for educating the mindless wandering public that treat hermies like throwaway pets! as far as any advice from me goes I think that you have a pretty good plan on how you are going to go through with all this, the only thing I have to say for the crabs is because this could become slightly stressful, make sure that there will be PLENTY of water. also make sure to pay close attention humidity and as far as temp. goes I think it would be a good idea to attach an undergravel heater esp. if this function is eather going to be outdoors or in a chilled building. :)

I would also be careful about the transporting just to and from the house/school. With the outside temperatures dropping rapidly, I'm afraid the temperature change alone between inside the house to outside might stress them.

I don't think a towel will keep them warm enough.

I might suggest a small Rubbermaid container. You can set the 'tat inside, and put heated (like, straight from a dryer) towels inside between the glass of the tank and the walls of the container.

This can help protect the crabs from both the juggle of being transported and the cold.

Or perhaps get a ride to and from the science fair? Possibly with a parent, or another sibling (if you have any).

I would be more concern about the transporting of them given the weather. Even if it is warmer in Texas, it could cause a concern.

I would advise *NOT* to transport the crabs in a jacket at this time of year.

I would worry about:
1) The cold temperatures
2) Crabs pinching you
3) Dropping crabs even if you try to be most careful

Keep the crabs in the 'tat, put the 'tat inside a plastic container that you might store clothes in (look down the aisle marked "Plastic Storage" at Walmart for ideas). Put warm towels inside the plastic container but outside your 'tat for cushioning and warmth.

That's a really neat idea for science fair. How exactly are you making the presentation? Mine had to something to "test", so I don't exactly think that would have worked for me...

Maybe you could tell them there's a hermitcrabassociation.com??? Or would you be laughed at... my hermit crab hobby is a definite form of amusement for some of the rather pesky people in my grade.

Anyways, I think you've got a great idea happening there. :) Let us know how it goes. :)
