Why are they always boys?!

With the newest additions to the tank being more boys, I am forced to ask the question - What gender are your hermit crabs?

Out of 17 crabs, only three of mine are girls (Echo, Sierra, and Tsunami). That means I have 14 boys! Even the Es are all boys!

Are there more male hermit crabs harvested, or do I just have the knack of choosing male crabs?

i don't know any of their genders, so i just labeled them all as boys
one time i tried to check oliver's gender once and i dropped him on the hardwood... needless to say i was FREAKING out
never again... from now on they are all boys unless i decide they can be girls

All four of mine are girls, it's kind of annoying actually, I like boy names. Titan gets a boy name anyway because I didn't know how to tell gender when I got her.

I can usually tell gender when they crawl on the mesh of their tank lid or I'll hold them over the tank near the ground so they stretch to reach the ground.

I don't know the gender of any of mine, but my 6 yr old daughter told me they are all girls because I'm a girl. If I was a boy, then all the crabs would be boys. LOL!!!

Wild hermit crab populations should theoretically have more males than females since the females have to go into the water to release their eggs, I would assume some get washed out to sea. So it definitely a treat to have a large or even jumbo female :)

...my group is almost all female, oddly enough. Ive got about 45 crabs, around 30 are female. :)

I have about the same ratio. Most of mine are male.

I think I may just be awful at sexing the crabs.......

Both Spike and Filbert are actually girls.....

So now it's Spikette and Filamina. For the time being, at least. :) I'm not thrilled with the names but I've been calling them that for months now.

I'm going to have to recheck the others. I thought I was doing okay with just seeing their third legs, but I think the angle has to be just right in order to see the gonopores. Kinda hard to do when half the crabs won't even come out when picked up! Giggles and the previous New Guy are definatelty boys.

I know for certain that with the Es I have four boys and three gals. They're easy to get out, but I got pinched a bunch for bothering them!

Edit:
Yeah, really suck at it.
Kratos is a girl, too!

I made the mistake of saying that exact statement to my hubby when he had just woken up.

He kinda of stumbled for a second and goes "But the mini-games?! He can't be! But.... THAT's the mind-blowing ending for III?! They said it was going to leave people reeling!!!"

:hlol:

I felt bad because he thought I was being completely serious. For a second I almost ruined GoW for him....
