Thanks my parents think it is excessive for four hermit crabs but unless there are any for adoption close by it will only ever house four :)

No, it is in no way excessive. Remember that they had an entire island to roam over in the wild, and as they grow, they need much more molting space. Any size tank is tiny compared to what they would have naturally, and adding individuals to a group in captivity always geometrically multiplies (not just adds to) the chances of things going wrong. If your four are a stable and peaceful group at this point, I would discourage you from adding more, even if adopting. Assuming they survive the potential decades they could survive to, four will be plenty to have to provide for, anyway. Your "monster" looks like an excellent home zoological exhibit, which is really what you end up having to provide when you keep these critters. I know your parents are probably agog at what they thought were "cheap, easy-care pets" turning out to actually be wild animals with complex needs and requiring zoo-quality managed habitat in order to survive, but on the other hand, they can congratulate your capacity for learning, for care for your fellow creatures in an unfortunate situation, for applying science to solve complicated problems--all qualities worth investing in!

Yeah I tried explaining to them they came from the wild and had more space but they don't particularly like them so I kind do too much more about that but I actually researched a lot before getting hermit crabs and my parents had no part in thinking they were cheap pets although they kind of think I'm crazy for how much I spend on them but oh well :) The heat lamp was for my birthday and my mum was like it doesn't seem like much for your birthday and I was like as long as my pets are happy, I'm happy :D

My parents say I spent to much on mine too! I save up allowance and yard work money to buy plants, food, and recently a upgrade tank. It's just to hard not to spoil them rotten. They're like, you can save up for a TV or computer and I'm like well the crabs need more stuff still and my parents just stare at me like somethings wrong haha

About 5 months ago I spoiled the fish so it's the crabs turn now, the fish had a total tank remodel and it was fun to watch them explore new stuff, they don't get new stuff often because usually my dad pays for the fish because he likes them, no one else seems to understand crabbies haha

Once I was trying to sleep and herd really loud metal sounds so I checked on them and Candie's on the underside of the lid using her claw to pull at the metal screen, she also managed to rip the plastic wrap covering it with her toes. Funny crab
