Fix for no climbing space

Post by IBlab crab » Tue Jun 14, 2016 5:27 pm

I want to share an idea I have done to help give my jumbos climbing space.
First off not all of us can have giant mega gallon tanks because of either space or being able to physically maintain such a large tank.I am the later,I weigh 80 lbs. With having jumbos most of the space in your tank is reserved for deep substrate and leaves no room for climbing, plus with jumbos you need something big and sturdy for climbing. I came up with idea to go down but not take up too much floor space. I used a very narrow plastic container that I sunk down into the substrate all the way to the bottom with about 1 1/2 inches above substrate. You want to use something not very wide but very tall.I placed a big mopani pc. into the container,I also used a black seafan for the side but any kind of wood, cholla etc. will work. The other plus is the wood does not mildew or mold because of not being on the wet substrate.
You can either use 2 containers, the same stacked into each other for removal, to clean out or you can use a wet/dry vac hose to clean. This was a big hit with my jumbos and they also liked nesting in the bottom like they do the large caddies. I liked the fact it used little floor space and added a place to explore.I even made a smaller version for my smalls in another tank. I used an extra large version of sterilites "show off's" containers but they are hard to find. I think the container was supposed to be used for files because of how narrow and deep it was so maybe you can find a container similar.I hope my explanation was enough because although I did take pics I am not good at posting them.

So like a water dish sunk to the bottom of the enclosure and then all these climbing decor placed inside - with no water?

Almost like a basement?

Wonder if it would work with a large cork bark tube?? Just trying to picture how I could do this for my hermies. I have a 20 gallon and thinking of ways to add extra exploring areas.

Could, since cork is meant to be hydrophobic so should "repel" water... Which mould loves. But yeah, watch out for potentual moulding issues just in case.
