Oh, crab! The crabitat has to move....

Been quite a while since I was last on here, I'll post about that elsewhere.

The very short version of the story is that I have no choice but to move my 55 gallon tank across the room.

A friend will be here tomorrow, hopefully he can help my husband move it (I am not allowed to lift right now). I need to try and make it lose some weight, which I think I can do by removing some sub one spoonful at a time. I also plan on taking the pools out completely during the shift.

Here's my question. Without unpacking a tote or buying another one, the only thing I have available that I can put sub in that I can close up so it won't dry out is a styrofoam cooler previously used to ship medications in. Is that going to be safe? Also, should I leave the crabs that are out and about in there, or would it be better to move them to iso? Not certain how many that might be, I usually only see one or two at a time. My iso is just 10 gallons, but hopefully it would just be until tomorrow.

I would take everything out that I could including crabs. Ad far as the styrofoam cooler I'm not sure. But if the sub dries out you can re-wet. Do you have any down molting right now?

Hard to say. I had three, but pretty sure one never came up from his first molt. Adopted five, lost one of those within a couple weeks, I *think* I have seen everyone else at least once since then, but never all at the same time.

It's like they come and go in phases. I'll have 3 up and when they go down the other 3 come up. It's like a schedule they go by. Maybe they have s calendar they use and say / you, you and you will be awake during the summer months and then when you 3 go down to sleep, you, you and you will wake up!!!

I wish you all the luck with this huge move. I wouldn't be too worried about keeping the substrate wet as you can re-wet. I know when I did my overhaul last Saturday I was able to find 2 of my crabs. I ISO'd them in the 10 gallon and when I put them back in the 65 gallon after the overhaul they are doing just fine.

Are you taking out everything?

I will be taking out as much as I can. Don't know that it can all come out, guess that depends on how many are under and where they might be.

I guess my question is less about keeping the sub wet, and more whether styrofoam might hurt it. My only other readily available option is a laundry basket.

I'm just not sure about the styrofoam cooler as it could have chemicals or something in it to make it a cooler. The laundry basket could work. What you need is a clean mop bucket. That's what I use to pre mix my substrate in. Maybe someone else can help with what to use.

Well, my husband insisted that they should be able to move it without taking anything out. I figured he would change his mind when they tried it. What they did was actually pretty clever. We discovered that the kitchen table is almost exactly the same height as the tank stand. We put furniture gliders under the table and slid the tank onto the table. Moved the stand, cleaned dust off, organized the heater cords, glided the table across the living room, slid the tank back onto the stand. Turned out to be easy-peasy, no jostling at all. I had taken just the pools out, but I don't think they would have even spilled.

My husband did admit that even though it went so smoothly, the tank is rather heavier than our new entertainment center, which had a shipping weight of 200 pounds...

That is one heavy tank!!!! I am so glad things went so smoothly!! Awesome job!!! Way to go hubby for being clever and coming up with an amazing way to move the tank!!
