Sad for him
Sad for him
One of the teachers at the school I work at has a hermit crab named Jack. She has had him 3 years and he is by himself and in terrible conditions. He has like maybe half an inch of colored calci sand, a small thing of water with a sponge, and some pellet food. Room temp and room humidity. I feel so bad for him but don't know if there is anythimg I can do. I'm amazed he has lasted 3 years! She is currently on summer break and I have been taking care of her crab and fish in her room. Wish I could take him and put him in my tank.

Re: Sad for him
That is actually a good idea! Play it off as "I wanted to do something nice for you."
I think some crabs are like super-crabby. Mr. CrabbyCakes had a hermit crab (Hermie) in a wire tank for 8 years. Seriously, 8 years with only a sponge and he always surface molted. Mr. CrabbyCakes had no idea they molt UNDER he sand. I have read on this site and some other places about a zoologist who kept a crab on his desk for like 25 years. At one point I had found an image of the crab. He lived off of greens. Granted this should not be encouraged but I think a very few are not as fragile as others.

Petco is having their dollar per gallon sale right now so you could pick up a 10gallon for $10.
Re: Sad for him
That is a great idea, but unfortunately there wouldn't be any room for a larger tank in her class plus I have $2 in my bank account, yeah adulting is hard lol. But I may talk with my boss about it and see what we can do!soilentgringa wrote:Petco is having their dollar per gallon sale right now so you could pick up a 10gallon for $10.

Being an adult is the worst.
You should feel good to know you are doing what you can without taking the crab hostage (and you can't do that.)

The problem with that is she would replace it with another crab.friesb4uxbabe wrote:fake his death and keep him jk! poor little fella, i hope things get better for him!

So it wouldn't fix anything.
Currently the caretaker for:
Six hermies in 37G bow front, and two more in a ten-gallon tank.
I build websites, and blog about ebooks.

Re: Sad for him
Doesn't Petco have little 5 or 8 gallon tanks that are similar size to that pet carrier?
Re: Sad for him
Asked my boss and she said we needed the teachers permission first, she said the crab was perfectly fine and doesn't want anything changed. Oh well, I will at least give him moist play sand tomorrow and some fresh food

Re: Sad for him
Print out the care guides and politely but firmly explain that the crab is not fine and will die if not placed in a proper habitat.AML wrote:Asked my boss and she said we needed the teachers permission first, she said the crab was perfectly fine and doesn't want anything changed. Re: Sad for him
Show her the site, images of amazing (but functional) hermit crab habitats and like soilentgringa said, print out the care guides.

Re: Sad for him
The problem is she doesn't work the summer program, like I said I am taking care of her crab currently for the summer. But this is my last week there because we move in a week. I fear there is not much I can do other than at least put moist play sand in his small tank.aussieJJDude wrote:Show her the site, images of amazing (but functional) hermit crab habitats and like soilentgringa said, print out the care guides.

Re: Sad for him
So you are moving and will not see her again? If that is the case I would put in the play sand then leave a packet of information for her to read by the tank.
