Mosquitoes In My Crabitat?

Post by GabyRaven » Mon Aug 01, 2016 8:53 pm

Hey everyone,

I got my lovely crabitat about three weeks ago. Trouble is, I have started to have an unbelievable amount of mosquitoes in my bedroom for the past few days. We're talking literally 5 per day at least that I kill. I'm eaten alive lol, which begs the question: can mosquitoes breed in crabitats? Ive got Eco-Earth and the humidity is at least 70 at all times, so it's moist. Is this possible? If so, how do I stop it?

Thanks in advance!

-Gaby :)

Hi there! I'm not 100%, but I think your main concern is your water dishes, as they lay their eggs in standing sources of water. To combat that, I would advise that you do frequent water changes until the mosquitoes are no longer an issue. :)

I change them every two or three days, is that long enough for the mosquitoes to lay eggs and hatch?

Okay, will do! Good to know it's possible. I live in South Florida so mosquitoes run rampant here. It sucks
Thanks!

Your health could be at risk also being in FL right now with zika. Im in jax and have been staying indoors as much as possible to keep away from them!

Girl, florida is covered!! The mosquitoes are breeding out of control and the higher ups are scared! They don't see a reasonable rational way to get rid of mosquitoes!

I would try bubbler pools, if you haven't already the constant water agitation might make laying their eggs difficult. This is just an idea though. It's just an aquarium pump ( sold at Wal-Mart for 7 bucks) airline tubing (2ish) and airstones. ($1) I know you probably don't need the humidity boost. But at least there won't be surface tension.

Well, I'm glad you like it down here :) Not for me though lol! And I have water dishes but I don't think they're big enough for a bubbler. Should I get a bigger tank? I currently have a 10 gal and 3 small/medium crabs

It doesn't matter what size they are, as long as it doesn't make the water over fill, as long as they are big enough for the crab to submerge you're good. I'd honestly wait until the next let's dollar per gallon sale to upgrade though, its so much cheaper!

I'll have to get bigger dishes then, my biggest crab is too big to submerge completely
