For those with false bottoms!

Post by DinoJax » Thu Sep 15, 2016 2:57 pm

I'm about to redo my dual 60gal and install false bottoms. I get how they work and how to do them but I have questions for those with them. I read the emergency post about a crab getting through and wanted to know how those with false bottoms evaded that? Also wondering if I should do a false bottom on both sides of the tank or just on the side with water?

Do you have a humidifier? Just doing it on the one side should be fine, however I would reccomend in doing both sides. Just in case something happens or you want to "switch up" the bowl placement your free to do so without worrying.

I've never had a false bottom, but hopefully I can give some ideas until people that have them see this. :) The best thing to do in ensuring the crabs don't pass through is to have it on egg crate and having both sides of the egg crate covered with some fine mesh - tied down securely. That way, if they do break across the mesh, the sand will fall until it hits the other side of the mesh and the crabs can get through and break the other side mesh.... Think of it as a sandwich, the "mesh" is the bread and the eggcrate is the filling. :)

No Humidifier. I find I don't need it with my set up. I figured I'd only really need it on one side but maybe both was for safety. I think I just wanted affirmation. XD I was going to use eggcrate and find some material to coat I guess I was just wondering if that seemed like enough for people. If that seemed to work to keep crabbies out.
