The way I do it is to leave the unit out on a shelf or table in my living room for several hours. I then check the thermometer's reading against the ambient temperature of the house (currently set at 80 degrees). The new Acurite thermometer/hygrometer registered 81 degrees temperature so I know it's 1 degree "over" (it was 5 degrees "under" on humidity after the salt test).
