Tank Flooding

Post by TazandBruce3 » Sat Oct 01, 2016 3:42 pm

This has been occurring for a few months now, but my tank's substrate has been flooding at the bottom.

Originally, I figured I was over-wetting the substrate, by pouring the water bowls into the dirt when I change them. I stopped doing this, but the flooding is still occurring. The water is a red/brown color and smells like rotten eggs. The water always accumulates where the substrate is dug out, such as where i place the water bowls, and the shell shop.

Has anyone else had this problem before? What causes this?

I am upgrading my 20 G L tank to a 40 G tank tonight, but i'm still wondering what has been causing this.

Ooh. .. there was a recent thread about prevention/curing the problem, wherein this matter is discussed... check out recent thread "Two newly molted, one still soft, sulfur smell".

Prob from all the water you already poured into the sub caused a flood and a bacterial bloom

Flooding can happen even from overmisting...as sand doesn't hold water well, most moisture does to the bottom. He careful about adding too much moisture in the next tank, and things should be fine. I do suggest discarding any discolored/ rank smelling sand to prevent a bloom in the next tank. A quick forum search will pull up several threads on flooding.
