My second graders just researched how to make the best substrate. They chose a 4 cup scoop and dumped 5 full "loads" in and mixed it with 1 full "load" of ee. They used instant ocean water when they needed to wet the mixture because they read that it helps keep the tank from getting harmful bacteria. They then mixed it together and repeated until we had 8 inches in our 20 gallon. How this helps. [WHITE SMILING FACE]

How to mix sub properly help
Re: How to mix sub properly help
I think the 5:1 ratio is a guideline. I've heard of people filling tanks with various ratios that are all over the continuum, from 100% EE to 100% sand. These same people have had success long-term survival rates across the continuum. I personally used to use about 90% EE to 10% sand. I've now switched to a more sand heavy ratio, but I've never actually measured.

Me either. I'm far too lazy for all that jazz. XDmool wrote:I think the 5:1 ratio is a guideline. Also, it makes a HUGE difference when measuring by weight or volume. It sounds like most of you are measuring by volume. I wonder what the tanks would look like if you measured by weight? 5 pounds of sand to 1 pound of EE would mean that for a 50lb bag of sand, you would need 10bls of EE.
