I set my lights right on top of the glass. I put those little rubber bump things on the edge to try to hold the bulbs off the glass a little, it works just fine!

I have a couple of questions.
How important is UVB to the crabs?

Yup... those can sit on a versa-top. I've seen them like that in several pet stores and pictures of others crabitats.

Phew they are expensive! :?

It depends on what you are looking for/what you get, a lot of the fixtures in the Home depot link i provided were 4' long fixtures. They were expensive, the ones at my local hardware store were significantly cheaper...
