Purple Pinchers (PP's), I believe, are considered the hardiest species of hermit crabs. Straws are the most delicate.

I would say PPs definately. They are really hardy little buggers (compared to others) and I have not lost one yet in almost a year. Of course, it depends on how good your tank conditions are.
