Hello!!! I am new to forum and returning back to hermies...
Ello ello
I am a new (returning) crab mom to be :p I had hermies when i was a kid, but looking back, well i didnt know anything about taking care of them and they didn't do as well as i think they could have.
Flash forward 25 years..... married, living near Seattle with no kids but my pets and here i am.. browsing on the internet and it strikes me one day... I have my cats, and my chickens...but omg i miss the crabs !!!
So I go to hubby (who is giving me the oh god look when i say honey??? I need crabs!!!) and he agrees they would be an interesting activity to have around the house.
We got all the bits (no crabs yet tho) and are in process of setting up the Crab'Arium (what hubby calls it). We are just making sure temp and humidity are good and everything is all perfect as possible for the crablets. If we can get the humidity thing sorted out we are all good
I am sure I wil be posting many questions etc...so see you round the forums!! BTW this is an awesome site!!! I so wish I had had something like this when i was a kid...I still feel bad for the hermies i had. I did the best i could according to the info i had at the time, but it wasnt what they needed
Thanks!!
Shai (crabless atm)

welcome to the HCA!
I, too, wish I had stumbled upon this site earlier, prior to coming here my hermies led (as I later found out) a very sad life.
We would love to see pictures of the crabs once you get them picked out. what kind of set up do you have?

My hubby spoiled me
We got a 20 gallon aquarium, and it has coral sand on one side and FB on the other. We have a nice deep seawater pool for them that they can easily get out of, and some nice big climbing rocks and branches and netting for them. They have a half log to climb over and hide in... i didnt like the cocohuts but this will do for now till I find one I do like. We got a UTH that is side mounted, and lots of greenery for hiding. Hubby is already looking into idea about making a 2nd story lol he is having so much fun in messing with the tank....
We are hopefully getting the crabchildren today so YAY!!!! They look like PP...so we shall see. We are not planning on getting big ones... just little ones for time being... i guess small is right term...the ones we saw are bigger than the micros. I hope they like their new home...I am trying so hard to make it so good for them. Even found a neat site called http://www.epicureanhermit.com so these guys wil be spoiled if i can manage to not kill them. I am so hoping this works tho... i love hermies!!

epicurean hermit is a great site! they have cool recipies there too...it may be sad, but feeding my hermies is one of the best parts of my day!

Sounds like you have it all settled out and you did your homework, yay for you! And welcome to the HCA. I love my hermies, and i know you will too. As for a boost in the humidity, moss smells, but helps with humidity and damp sand helps a whole lot. Post pics of the little guys once you get everything together!

We got them!!!
I am so tickled atm....
we went to the store and walked out with 6 hermit crabs All are a bit on small side...but not quite micro. The largest is sort of sad tho lol he has a bright blue Superman shell, so i am hoping i can get it gone rather quickly...but with my luck he will decide that he wants to keep it. The smallest is a tiny thing that is constantly with SuperCrab, so we called her Lois
Can't have a hermit crab without naming one in memory of my first... Buster Crabbe. And finally the remaining 3 are always heading for same spot etc... is rather funny so we called them Larry, Moe and Curly after the Stooges.
We got them home and they were all VERY active. I set up the water for them...fresh saltwater, and set their fresh water in for them, and the food, then set each into the salt water pool. they sat there for the longest time just washing their eyestalks and wiggling thier antenna. They slowly came out of the water and jetted around checking out the joint. the "Tree" that we made out of a large piece of grapevine and artificial foilage is a hit... everyone ended up hanging out around it. So far so good...everyone was up and moving...no one seems to have been overly stressed, and they seem to be happy crablings. They seem pleased with the coral sand and with the FB... they all were digging here and there exploring last night.
I gave them a good dinner of crushed Terrafauna crab pellets (weaning them off casue i dont like them eating it but is all they were given at the store), some dried raisin/cranberry/mango and a sprinkle of Fruit and flower by T-rex. They scarfed it down overnight.... this am I took their dish out and gave them a chunk of apple and squashed banana with a drizzle of honey, and a few flakes of Total for them to nibble on today and tonight along with the fresh squashed kibble pellets.
No one has touched the fresh stuff yet but I just put it in and I think most are asleep. One of the Stooges changed his shell this am, so that was a blast to see!! I do know I need to get more shells tho...i dont think they are thrilled with the ones in there atm but it is only their 2nd day.
So far so good... thanks for the welcome !!!!

OH! That sounds wonderful and I am so glad to hear of how well they are adjusting. I usually give my crabbies a stressbath before putting them into my crabitat, it also gives me a chance to see if they have any parasites to prevent contamination. (Just a precautionary thing I do.) Hope they all find their new home exciting, it sounds wonderful. I may have to see about making a grape vine tree. I think I can imagine how it looks. Great idea! Keep us posted as to how they are doing.
