New crab owner with pics

Post by Guest » Tue Jul 04, 2006 5:50 am

Hello all

I've Ben lurking here for a month now reading up on all the great info so I could start a habitat. Well yesterday I set out to purchase everything I needed to start my tat. See the plan was no crabs just the tank and all the items. Well I hit wall-mart to pick up my tank because they had some good prices. So I grab my tank off the shelf and turn around and all these little plastic cups catch my eye. To make a long story short it was rescue time and I just had to buy the poor little guys. No food or water and one even had a broken shell. I rush home boil everything and clean it, running around my kitchen like a mad man trying to get everything ready. I think I have to dig my self a hole now and distress. But here are the pics of the gang.

This lil guy spent a good 6 hours playing in his salt water pool.

This is the one who had a broken shell. As soon as I turned my back on him to go grab some food he did a quick change into a new shell.

Image
This little goof likes to sneak up on everyone siting around the pool and push them in. Then he runs off laughing back into his cave.

My camera shy crab.

If anyone can make a guess of there species for me it would be great. I have partial color blindness and some of the tricks using colors and such are throwing me off LOL!

adorable E's...you just can't resist those little eyes!

hehe...the little one who pushes the others into the water dishes is funny! I have never personally seen crabs in a cup at walmart (mine doesn't do hermies at all) but I am not surprised that you could resist bringing them home.

welcome!

They are adorable, hope you have got the tank all nice and set up. Those are indeed Ecuadorians, cute little guys at that. Keep us updated on their health and activity and let us know if we can help in any way. :)

What lucky little E's that you came around! How beautiful they are! BUT, you'd better start complaining to the store manager at Wal-mart so they don't get more or you'll end up with quite a few crabs me thinks!

Those are such cute crabs! I really like that little goof but he better hope the others don't throw him in the pool in return. :P I'm a new crab owner too and I know how you worry about setting up everything for them. I'm surprised about the place you bought them from. No food or water? Those poor babies. :( But at least they have you to take care of them now. Good luck!

awesome rescue operation. Bet they are happy!

I've done similar "rush" rescue operations with Wal-Mart bettas. You just feel you can't get them home fast enough and into good conditions. I rescued a 1/2 dead pink tiny girl betta probably 1 1/2 years ago, and now she's the queen of her 10 gallon tank, spending her days chasing the poor neons.

Update

Post by Guest » Wed Jul 05, 2006 12:52 pm

They also had 20 some white frogs and about 10 water crabs also in cups!

So far the gang is doing ok, most have gone into the rock cave in the tat to hang out and hide. I don't know why but one has been sleeping out in the open on a log or on the sand and hasn't dug down or hid yet. I thought they all need to destress but he has just been walking around having the run of the tank.

I put some honey in the tank last night before I went to bed and when I woke up....... CHAOS! Both sponges pulled out of the dishes and they were full of sand, about 5 holes dug and food all over the place. I'm thinking honey = PARTY! and I missed it.

Today they get corn, bell peppers, rolled oats, and a bit of apple. I also just got done cracking open a coconut and put a big piece of the meat in there tat. Just looked in on them to see everyone awake double fisting coconut into there mouths.

I can't wait to get my tat set up! I also have been reading up on as much as possible. Although I have to wait until at least mid august (that is when I get back from seeing my brother in Denver). Good luck with your new buddies. They sure look like fun!! :D

hehe, i miss having my tank all trashed in the morning! all six of mine are buried without surfacing for at least three weeks. its good that you're rotating foods, the crabs will like it best that way. i find it fun to think up new little "meals" or combinations of foods to give them. and coconut is a big hit with my crabs too!

pretty shells

Post by Guest » Thu Jul 13, 2006 5:08 pm

They all came w/ pretty pants too! A nice variety of shells. Great job doing your homework first. Altho' it is best to let your tank conditions stablize first, I'd have jumped the gun on the crab purchase too!
