can you put different types in one tank.

Post by Guest » Thu Jul 06, 2006 7:22 pm

I was wondering can you put 2 different types of hermies in one tank. Like a PP and an E or whatever the combo.
I love reading all the info on this site. I wish I could write to people, but I'm new to hermie haven, so I don't know what to tell people, but Hi and have fun.
So Thanks to everyone who's help me out.

Yes, you can put as many different species together as you want! I have all 6 species in one tank, myself. Just make sure they have adequate room, because some species of crabs are more territorial/need more space than others.

Happy Crabbing!

I echo Jenius!, crabs of all different species can get along together. some species though, like straws, have special requirements (higher, more stable temp/humidity) so some people have them in their own tank. I currently have PPs, Es, and a ruggie in my tank, and they all get along quite well.

To the first, yes. Most of the people here do it with no ill effects. I actually have 4 species happily housed together right now. And I have cross species friendships develop. For instance, one of my PPs loves to buddy up with my Es. My largest PP loves to hang with my straws. Stuff like that. They're cool with each other. Even different sizes are ok. I have anything from micro to small-medium in my tank, no fights are anything. The only thing to make sure of is to offer the proper type of shells for each species and lots of shells. I've found that it also helps if you offer shrimp or some other seafood in their regular diet. I did have a slight aggression problem from one of my PPs, but once she started eating the baby shrimp I constantly offer, she's been fine. Plus shrimp helps their coloring. :)

As to the second half, you're welcome to PM me with any questions you might have. To do that, just click on the link up top ^ that says "you have no new messages" (it's to the right of the profile link). That takes you to your inbox. You can send a PM from there. :) Me or anyone else here will gladly try to answer your questions. And even if it's just a message to say hi and what's up, it's still nice to make friends with people from different areas as you. :) We're an international group of people, so you can learn a few things you didn't know by talking with other people. :)

Hope that helps, and if ya want to PM me, I'm always on the computer, so I'll respond soon as I get it. :)

I don't think a single one of us here on the board minds getting a PM asking for help and advice. Besides that, we were all new once, too. I can't imagine anyone on the board teasing someone else for asking any question. I have only been around for a few months myself, but I can honestly say that I've never met such a nice group of people before! Plus, there are a lot of weird myths out there, and most pet stores don't give out good care sheets. Part of our mission statement is to educate everyone about proper hermit crab care.

I definitely agree. I've only trusted the info from this site ever since I became a member a few months ago. And don't be shy to ask questions. We're like one big happy family and we'd be happy to help and also to just listen to stories, etc, not just about crabs, but anything.
