Where can I get some Jumbo Hermit Crabs???

Post by Hermie Lover » Wed Jul 19, 2006 9:13 am

Hey all,

I know most of yall don't really recommend buying crabs online. But I am looking for some more jumbo crabs, and I have had a hard time finding them!

I could drive 4 hours to Myrtle Beach, but I just want to look around online first to see my other options.

If any of you could recommend some vendors online that have these in stock, please let me know.

Thanks!!!
Angela

do you have any Petsmarts or Petcos close to you? a lot of times they have large or jumbo crabs. you could even just call them and ask what their largest hermit crab is (like baseball, tennis ball, quarter). that way you wouldn't have to drive to all those places.

I dont recomment shipping larger hermit crabs, not only is it costly to you...but very costly to them. If you want a hermit crab that hasnt been stressed during their petshop/ebay care and then stressed by shipping then I suggest that you drive if you want one. The big ones seem to stress easier in my experience...so driving would be well worth it.

Agreed. Driving would be a much more sensible option. I had to drive 2.5 hours to get my jumbo and she has been well worth the effort.

Thanks for the replies :)

As for Petsmart, there is one about an hour away, but all they have are small crabs, about 1-2" maybe. I have a few :) But I have never seen a Straw in person, and the Petco has some :)

I agree on driving. I may even get a wild hair and drive to the beach this weekend and pick up some :)

Sometimes petCos have large crabs. Ive yet to see a big one at PetSmart, they usually just have small ones here.

I think your hermie(s) will thank you for driving to get them....a bit less stressful I think. :)

I wouldn't rule out Petsmart altogether, because I have seen jumbos both at the one near my hometown and near my school :D.

Petsmart does generally carry micros, smalls, and mediums. Rarely they do have larges at the 2 nearby myself, but I have bought all of those in the past. :D

I wanted to buy the jumbos I saw so badly! but I knew that Big 'un wouldn't care for anyone larger than him (or even the same size or slightly smaller), so I quickly shot that idea down. I purchased two jumbo straws at a Petco at the the beginning of summer, and Big 'un was extremmly aggressive and just plain crabby. its a sad moment when you realize your favorite crab is a bully :( .

HermieLover, where abouts do you live? I am about 5 hours away from myrtle beach myself, I live (in the summer) in Morganton (NC mountains).

Saco Maine...The Kennel Shop. When I called they said they are the size of a fist. They were not kidding. I did not get one. No idea what size tank for those bugs. So only $7.99 plus gas :P

When I was in Rehoboth Beach, i went to sea shell shop, and they had a bunch of them. It is the one by the Wal-Mart there.

Caroline,

I am in southcentral VA. About an hour from Greensboro, NC. I just now posted about the agressiveness of my jumbo towards the newbies that I bought at petsmart yesterday. They are a little smaller than my big guy, and he immediately turned into a big meanie :( WHY is this? Will it get any better? I wanted him to have a friend or 2 his size. I am really worried now.

Haha. Hermielover, annopia:

I don't live very far from either of you (just thought it was interesting  )

Hermielover, I am only maybe 1 1/2 hours away from you...small world huh? LOL If you do happen to find any nearby, let me know.

Oh and if you are willing to drive down to Myrtle Beach, there is a place at North Myrtle (Cherry Grove Beach) that has huge crabs. The size of a baseball or larger. The store is beside a grocery store called Boulineau's, and even though the conditions aren't all that great, they have BIG crabs for cheap. It seems every year the conditions get worse and crabs keep looking less and less healthy. Anyway, the name of this store is called Barnacle and if you're ever nearby, you should check it out.

Just a suggestion...in case you ever head that way :D

Earthbound trading company carries jumbos, at least around here. They are the only ones that do around here.
Petsmart and pet warehouse used to carry crabs, but never jumbos and now they do not carry any. The kiosks still have crabs, but never jumbos and only painted shells. Earthbound has painted and natural.
