Rac is a very bad boy :(

Post by MommaChristina » Sun Mar 04, 2012 11:15 pm

So Rac has been my only crab that is up for the few weeks, Poppie came up the other night but when I couldnt find her just assumed she dug down again.......I should of looked a little harder or seen what Rac was up to in the corner :/ well for almost the whole day he was half buried in the sand on top of a empty shell,,,,well it wasnt empty :( it was Poppie but I just assumed it was a empty one that was in that spot, the shell I thought it was got pushed down and buried now :( ........so for a whole day that meany was on top of her trying to dig her out :( but she held fast. I really cat find anything wrong with her except a spot on the end of one of her legs, but not sure if Rac did it or not....She can completely pull herself in the shell she has now and the only thing you see is her big pincher just barely too...could this be what saved her? I really dont understand why he would want her shell...his is about the same size and there are plenty of other choices, 2 in the tank now are EXACTLY like the one she is wearing now, and not even that I think he should take one of the many bigger shells that are open! He has always taken shells he can barely put his belly into..you can always see his eyes!

ok I'll show some of the shots I got
so heres the bad boy :/ where he retreated when I took the food and water dishes out
Image
and heres Poppie, in the temp iso she climbed right in this salt water, not sure if you can see her one leg...does it look ok to you guys?
Image
Image
once I put her in the tank again she went right to the spot where the curtain was open so she could watch the snow, thats how I knew it was Poppie for sure
Image
Image
he was ashamed and was going down
Image
she is climbing just fine
Image
checking out the temp food dishes(they will probbly be dumped by morning)

UPDATE<<<< it was not Poppie, it was Tiny...but he is fine and since switched into Racs old shell and Rac took the green turbo that he so desperatley wanted before... here are some pics before that happened
this is the one that cleared up my confusion, I dont know how you guys with more crabs keep track of them!

another of them getting along

I see tiny saying 'why are you such a jerk sometimes, man?'
Image
Sorry some are blurry, I guess its time to clean the glass with some vinegar

thanks for checking them out :) any suggestions or thoughts are welcome and appreciated

She looks like she's going to be just fine :happy10: I think the oversized shell combined with being dug down really helped her, but if it was a full blown shell fight, he would of dug her out, maybe it was something else? (If you're sure about their genders, pre-couplatory gaurding might be a possibility) Or maybe since she just came up he was re-establishing his territory and himself as the boss of the place. Who knows :smt102 What's important is that she's ok :smt081
They're very cute little guys by the way, love the pics! Is that a crab shaped food bowl? :smt103 (want want want! :smt080 )

Precopulatory gaurding is before mating, it's when the male essentially hangs on to the female for hours, even days, and won't let go, even if she tries to get away (by burying, maybe) Heres a video of wolf's crabs doing it ;) It's actually kind of cute. I'm geussing this since he wasn't violently digging her up or injuring her
