Shell SWAP!

Post by JamesTosches » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:32 pm

Earlier today I was surprised to see that my two little crabbies (Wikkus and CJ) swapped shells. Literally... They moved into the others shell. Anyone see the before?? :hlol:
"I watch him scurry on the sand, To find a house that’s second-hand.
He crawls in someone else’s shell, And stays because it fits him well.
Imagine if we did the same,Just barged right in and staked a claim
To any empty house that fit,Then settled down to live in it."

A shell swap would be the direct result of a shell fight. Crab decides it wants Craabs shell, so he shakes him out of it. Crab moves into Craabs shell, and Craab has no choice but to go into Crabs shell. Sometimes the second crab gets either killed or heavily injured, so luckily both your crabs are okay!

Not necessarily! One could have changed to a different shell, the second crab put on the first's old shell, and the first didn't like his new one so he put on the second's old shell.

A couple years ago I took a day and finally figured out who all of my crabs were based on the records I had taken when I brought them home. (Comparing photos.) I was so proud of myself since it had been so hard to keep track of a bunch of them since they were all around the same size. I woke up the next morning and something like 12 or 13 of them hadn't put on new shells - they swapped them. :lbanghead: I pretty much gave up after that since I had to rely on their shells to help in the ID.
