 Mine is a tan-ish color (I think maybe most of the east coast is). I think out west it's darker and sometimes courser and I've seen some that looks super fine and almost white. It's all natural, just depends on where it's sourced from.

I agree, as long as it's natural sand, that's clean and tunnels well, it should be fine no matter the brand.

Totally based on what it's made out of and where it's being mined/collected. In the Pacific Northwest it's dark from volcanic rocks. East of the Mississippi it's light and fluffy from sandstone. White sand is coral or shell based. And since it's heavy and costs a lot to transport the mines or pits are fairly local to where it's sold. Playsand is highly regulated since it's used for children, which means no matter where it's purchased or what it contains, it's safe to use. :)

It works about the same, but the particles are way smaller and it's dusty. Overall, it works the same. I mix 2:1 parts sand to peat moss. The crabs seem to like it.
The Exo Terra does have some pretty big chunks in it, actually. I've already been told in another thread that it isn't the best for burrowing in, but I'll keep it for now until I have to clean the tank. My crabs sure like to pick at that stuff and eat it, but that's about it. Then I'll switch to something else... EE, or maybe I'll have to check out this peat moss... hmm. o-o

As for sand now, I'm not too worried about it anymore. Thanks everyone!

I am a new hermit crab owner and need advice on how to make the play sand substrate into sand castle consistency. I bought the same one from Home Depot and will need to change the substrate soon - I got the tank with substrate and crabs from another person who didn't want it anymore.

You can mix it with water in a bucket before dumping it into the tank. Don't dump too much water in at once or else it might get soggy. Dump some in, mix thoroughly, then add more if you need it. Most people suggest using salt water, not fresh, because salt may inhibit some bacterial growth.
