My crabs like the longer, loose terrerium moss rather than that kind of moss which is shorter and grows on dirt/substrate. They like to be able to bury down in the moss so when I tried the frog moss type they just "dug" it up, tore it into little tiny pieces and threw it around everywhere.

I use something that sounds like terrarium moss. It dries very quickly and feels almost wire-y. I think its supposed to beaked moss, but i'm not too sure. I hate it. Its so fluffy the crabs are always kicking it everywhere. It never holds moisture, like the water just rolls off or dries off. Yet, all my crabs are constantly in it. The PPs seem to live in it while the Es are either underground or in the moss. I will be adding 3-4 more moss pits. My tank will be a moss pit crab mansion!

YYWW's moss sounds a lot like mine - it stays nice for about a week, then it starts drying out, I can't keep it wet, wire-y feeling - all the same stuff. But my crabs love it up in the moss pit! On any given morning, I can find 1-4 up there sleeping. Which reminds me, I think it's time to replace it today.....

My crabs def love it but i feel like they'd enjoy any moss? I'm definitely interested in trying new moss..
Btw CrabbySquirrel how do you know you need to replace it? I havent replaced any of it since July, but i'm not sure what to look for. I just spray the moss until it drips, and toss it a little bit to even it out.

I use the "fluff factor" (LOL) -- most mornings, I spray it, fluff it up, and call it good -- when I start tossing it around and it doesn't have that nice fluffy feeling to it, or if it starts getting to flat and won't stay wet for long, I whip up a new batch. I think it averages a few weeks or so - then it just starts to look yucky, does that make sense? And that's when I replace it....since I only have one small-ish size moss pit right now, it's easy to do because I can crack off a chunk of the large brick of moss that I have. Once I start to have more, larger moss pits, I will probably try to go longer between changes.

I also notice that when crabs no longer sleep up there for days at a time, it's probably time to change it! :)

There must be something up with my moss! No matter how wet or how long it never changes texture! Also theres tiny stringy sprout looking things among the green/yellow fluffy stuff.... Idk, i need new moss!

I used to use the terrarium moss by zoo med or whatever but it would NEVER stay wet. On top of that my shower caddy has holes in the bottom and it would always fall through and dry up the substrate on the bottom. But i was wondering if this moss was safe because it is severely fluffy and i know my crabs would enjoy it as long as it was safe for them and didn't fall through the cracks.
Lets see updates on the tank,

The glass lids make the humidity insane, and i turned my fogger off when i realized that it was in the 100s i was like whaaat. But one of my lids broke in such a way that I think i might attach needlepoint canvas to it to create a huge air flow gap, ill post pictures soon, along with ones that never got posted

Things to do:
New water dish
moss pit
shells for the Es
