Hey everybody it's me again. My hermit crab hermie passed recently. It was heartbreaking because I had her for 2 years. I would hand her food and she would eat it. She trusted me a lot. She surface molded successfully but didn't regain color. I tried my best to make her feel better. Unfortunetly she gave up. I came home from a fun lunch and saw that her she'll didn't not have a hermie In it. I looked into their hut and saw her. She streaked for the first time. This exact thing happened with toffee my crab that died. She came from a pet store that had a dead crab in it. Toffee was ill. I quickly picked hermie up gently and rushed downstairs. She was still alive. Once I had help I took a cup and got water from their bowl upstairs. I held hermie, speaking to her softly. I put some water on my hand. She dipped her little Pincher in and drank some. I rushed for some raisins (she LOVES raisins) and gave it to her. She didn't eat it she was very weak. I could tell she didn't have much longer because she was limp. I put her in an ISO to give her time. I spent a really long time praying for her. She didn't move. I didn't lose hope. A while later, I lost hope. I knew that she was gone, in a better place, happy. I kept her shell. It was painted but it was the only thing that reminded me of her. (Other than raisins) I wrapped her body up and set it it on my nightstand. I woke up and looked into the she'll and saw a SPIDER I saw the same spider on my wall before. I was angry. The spider went back into the shell. I had crabs for 5 years and I have never seen a spider in one of the shells. I didn't get a chance to kill the spider. Jumping to conclusions I thought the spider kicked hermie out of her shell. Have you had any experiences like this? We burried hermie in our garden with coconut my other little friend I gathered flowers from my plant and pit them on their graves.

Re: Spider!
I wouldn't worry about the spider (other than the creepiness), a spider would never be able to kick a hermit crab out of their shell.
Most of us have had spiders in the crabitat before, and besides the creepiness factor, not a real issue. In fact they might help kill other little bugs that get in.

I am very sorry for your loss. I'm sure she's in a better place and she will remember you and your love for her always. I was just wondering did she just come up from a molt?

Re: Spider!
Thank you so much! sadly, hermie never went underground to molt. Around when she was going to molt, I had calcium sand as substrate and I was feeding them hartz fish flakes and only tap water, no salt. I changed my conditions completely. I will post a topic later about my tank. Again, thank you.

Gosh darn spiders LOL
I had a moth flying around my house one day but couldn't catch it to let it out. So I went to bed and figured I would catch it the next day. Well sometime during the night it ended up in Big Oliver's crabitat (I used to have cage wire as the top of the tank) because in the morning there was a half eaten moth in the tank. Big Oliver would eat anything, he even ate plastic once - which I don't recommend.
Anyway, your first crab sounds like the molt took a lot out of her. Calci sand is no good for molting crabs. They spend all their effort trying to dig down and can't then don't have the energy to molt. Sounds like Toffee picked up a bacterial infection from the pet store. Sorry for your loss.

You've got it all wrong....we are the pets, not them!
