New Terrarium, How to transfer sand?

Post by citiliviey » Wed Feb 03, 2016 4:57 pm

I am getting a new terrarium, ever since my move back to my mom's, I can barely see my crabs. My 20gal is at the bottom of a big bookshelf, one of my 10gals and my 5.5gal ISO are above the 20gal, and my other 10gal is across the room. It is also difficult to position the heating lamps for the ones that are on shelves. I miss seeing and accessing my crabs easily. I need to transfer the sand from the terrariums I currently have to the new one(s) though. I don't know how many molters I honestly have, or what parts of their tanks that they are molting at. But yes, I need to transfer this sand. I would also like to add some ECO Earth to the sand but I don't know how that will happen with the chance of molters. Because I am having problems with keeping the humidity up in my tank and my sand, which I know is not good for the molters, I'm tired of knowing that I can still try to do more for my crabs. I'm ready to make them super happy and healthy like they deserve, I'm even looking into a tank heater that isn't a light bulb, I have heard that is a way better alternative to lamps, please help me about my situation with the new tank and all though, thank you!

Sorry, I might just be really tired and not fully understanding the post, but what is your question?

(Probs my fault lol.)
The main question for this post is how do I remove sand from one tank and transfer it to a new one? I don't know how many molters I have or where they are. I have 3 tanks I will be transferring the sand from into the new one.
The other question is how can I get my substrate more moist? I want to mix in EcoEarth when I transfer the sand, but I don't know if that can be done, so I need another alternative if not...

Ugh, Liviey just stop. (Talking to myself.)
How do I transfer sand from one tank to another without harming molters (which I don't know how many or where they are)?
Also, when I do this move to the bigger tank, how can I boost the moisture of the substrate?

If it's your only option (not able to wait out molters), then you'll need to very carefully dig through, ISOing any molters you find. Slowly and carefully dig down along one edge to the bottom. Then from there, you can work from the side, gently removing a layer at a time. This way you make it easier to spot molting caves without collapsing them.

Once you've slowly worked through the tank, ISOing all molters, you'll be able to remoisten and mix the substrate no problem.

How many crabs do you have spread throughout the tanks? Would it be possible to buy some new sand for the new tank? I it may be best since that way you can move the crabs that are up to the new tank and then just wait for the molters to come up to move them.
And yes, you can mix Exo earth in with sand. And it will help with moisture. Some people mix Eco earth and sand in separate containers, but I just did mine in my tank. (With no crabs or decorations in there)

Yes, for sure it is best this way.

Unfortunately, my car has been in the shop for about 10 weeks now, I only have one 50lb bag of play sand, the rest is in the terrariums, what utensil would be best to do the digging process with?

Your hands would best. A spoon would be ok.
