Do I fill in the holes?

Post by Crabymom » Sun Feb 21, 2016 7:28 pm

Just had one of my medium sized crabs come up from a few week of hiding. He has left a pretty large hole in the substrate. It is large enough for the 2 smaller crabs to fall into. Is it OK to fill it in so that they won't fall if they try to walk over it?

I smooth out my substrate regularly. Just make sure not to pack it down too tight just incase there is a crab molting below. (You don't want to collapse the cave)

Currently all 4 crabs are active in the afternoon. Thinking this would be a good time to fill in the hole, when I can see them all. They can dig more holes.

I loosely fill in holes on a daily basis. One of the favorite spots for my guys to start a tunnel is right by one of the rear legs of the resin mangrove tree; both the dry food bowl and the leaf bowl sit between the tree's legs and are often in danger of being swallowed by the huge hole every morning  !

haha mine do that too! Its like they do it on purpose or something? They cant dig holes in the wide open, it has to be where the food dish sits or a resign tree or cholla log. They literally sunk my bridge decoration where I could hardly see it anymore. I had to remove it and fill in and smooth over the area. Little buggers!

I fill them all the time. Often laughing maniacally. Lol

Glad you asked! After over two weeks home, mine just started digging for the first time. There's not a lot of floor in a 10 gallon crammed with necessities, so I was wondering if I should leave their burrows or fill them in. Thanks!

I did my first fill yesterday, when we noticed the half-log hide looked like it was falling into a sinkhole... a sight we're familiar with in Central Florida, LOL.

Do you all keep a little extra sub mix on hand for replenishing the tank as it settles, and filling in holes? This time, I just stirred up and redistributed what was already there, but it's a little lower in that area now.

I would totally do this too hahaha :hlol:
But right now none of my little buddies seem to want to dig down too deep. It's been 3 weeks since I got new friends for Zelda and a new home for the whole lot. :?: The closest I've seen to one digging is my biggest, Chancho, digging himself a little bed wherever he decides to rest. (usually in the hermit hut)
