I spent 126 per lid with the 1 corner clipped . I have a 125 gal so it is much larger.
#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.

Could this work for a hermit crab lid? Maybe as a sliding door if the rest is glass??

Decided to go with the glass sliding lids. Its a cool system and costs like under $20 its awesome. In the videos i saw the doors slid forward and back. I thought i would be able to get more room out of my lids if they slid side to side. This is what they look like so far, sorry i could not really get any good pics the glare was crazy.

What is the word on those backgrounds? Can they be used in hermit crab tanks or would they mold? If they were put on the outside would they burn from the UTHs?

I have not glued/siliconed the white corner liners in yet. The bottom glass piece just barley fits and is very tight and that is what is currently holding them in place. But i want the bottom one to slide to so i can access the other end of the tank. So i am probably going to have to find my glass cutter or somehow sand/shave a bit off that piece. But the top one slides just fine. I think i might also have to cut out a corner for the fog machine and maybe the other corners or some holes for ventilation. And since there was a hole in my silicone sealant tube it all dried up so i will have to go get more.

I was planing on making 2-4 handles out of a gnarled box elder branch in a sort of mini link-n-log fashion. But i realized i might also need a stopper at one end to prevent the glass from sliding right off the edge. So i might use some box elder for that as well.

I am sort of bummed because this tank could totally be ready by tomorrow night but i still have crabs down so i cant touch the substrate in the 20g =(

And is there any black paint that is safe for hermit crabs? That white is going to drive me insane.

Acrylic craft paint is non-toxic. You can find it at Walmart for like 99c
When you've been crabbing for so long, you don't even know how many crabs you have now...

Would i have to seal the corner liners with silicone after I use acrylic paint?

The lids are done!

well drying, and one needs to have a sharp edge sanded off, but they work great! i didnt bother with the acrylic paint because i didnt want to seal it and i didnt want to worry about it chipping.

Now i am just waiting on my two molters to come up. They are two small Es who have been down for about 4 weeks and i miss them and they are driving me crazy! This is when i last saw them. (Dont ask about the painted shells, such a long story)

Wow, missed out on a lot! The new lids look awesome though, love the use of sticks as the handles. :)

Thank you! And I ended up needing about 4 bags of sand lol. But I plan to put cocofiber on top because here in Utah sand will not stay moist, even with a fogger and constant spraying. It is so annoying.

So I took out the water dishes to clean them today and after i took them out lakota (last crab who was molting, smallest crab) plopped out and fell into the left over cavity. Its weird because last week this didnt happen and i could have sworn he was molting on the other side of the tank. There is no exo and he has a very defined color so i guess he is almost done but i have decided to put him in ISO and move everyone else into the 40g today. I have all the sand in there and moistened. When i bought the sand i looked for the brand that was O.K. to use (sakrete). This is okay to use right?

The only difference i can see from this one and the one posted on the substrate thread is the "all natural" vs "all purpose", I just noticed this but i assume its okay to use right?

Well if it is all natural it should have any nasties in it, however just make sure by opening the sand & see if you can spot leaves, twigs or other objects floating around. If so, I wouldn't recommend using it as who knows what type of pest might be in there. :)
