I absolutely love the gnome idea too. That is the most adorable thing ever, and I've never wanted something so badly.
Unfortunately, there are no hobby lobbys in my area (country?), and today is the day that I'm picking some crabbies up so I can't wait for shipping for all those items. However, I am making a trip to the states in a couple weeks, and maybe I can stop at one and pick some stuff up and redecorate my tank with it all.
I think thats what I'm going to do. I'm such a gnome fan. The wheels are turning and I have so many ideas. Time to start saving up for them!

Have you settled on a theme yet? I like the playing on words like Scrabble or Crab Cake theme. With lots of words in the tank or maybe a bunch of birthday or cake props.

I actually ended up having to go with the "Broke University Student" theme, where I used what I had and thats about it. Although, there is a very jungle-y vibe too it.
I'm very excited though, because I'm picking up a 40 gallon tank tomorrow for very cheap and I'm hoping that I'll be able to do some neat things with it in the future!

What about matching the theme to your hermies' country of origin?

Es?: Make a mini Machu Picchu!
Violas?: How about an ancient China theme, complete with terracotta warriors, ruins, and dragons? (or, if you have kids, Kung Fu Panda theme)
Blues?: Japanese theme with beautiful shrines and flowers (OR seemingly high-tech Tokyo/Blade Runner minimalism)
Straws or Aussies?: Australian outback with brown and red climbing rocks and lots of sand, or Great Barrier Reef with some fake coral structures and a great white shark.
