My hermie crab has molted twice within the last two months. This time i can't keep him in a shell. I had to make a little barracade for him and section him off...I put all the spare shells I have plus his on his side..

I have used the cup method using a little tuperwear container with 3-4 shells of diff sizes cleaning him off with the declorinated water and rinsing the shells. Last night when I put food into the crabitat and changed the water, I noticed my active crab was sitting in the moss pit, at least at that time I thought he was in his shell. This morning I went to check on the temp/humidity and the crabs (one is underground all the time), and noticed his shell was facing up and he wasn't in it. I found him in the corner where some shells were, but, he wasn't moving. I quickly moved him to a little container and put his shell in with him. My husband says he is dead since he isn't making any sort of movement, but, I wanted to check with you all here. 14. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)? I recently bathed all the crabs. The one that is out of its shell recently molted. ( I didnt know that when they bury themselves they are molting)

He was buried then placed in the water dish. After checking about an hour later he was lethargic looking and still in the dish. I took him out and placed him on the substrate a few hours later he had molted( I didnt know till finding this site that they eat their molts, we threw his out). He was retracted in his shell. I came back about 2 hours after that and noticed he was naked and some one had stolen his shell. He was slow to move about and seemed "lost". I didnt feel comfortable forcing him in to a shell so I placed him in a larger one that he was in.

He sat over night in that shell. I let him sit all day and see if he would climb in to his new shell. It took until about 5 today for him to right himself and squeeze back in the shell. I placed him on top of their food dish so that he eats or gets more energy.

Should I seperate him from everyone? Leave him be? What kinda TLC can I offer?
T.I.A.

Naked new big crab dropped limb

Since I forgot to fill this out first, I'm doing it now...

What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?

Playsand and coconut fiber... 60/40 mix

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?

Yes. Located about 5 inches from the substrate. Temp is usually at 72 and humidity has been 90... it's now adjusted to 85

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?

UTH

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?

Fresh well water (no chlorine) and Instant Ocean salt water (1.5 tsp./cup)

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?

fresh veggies, peanut butter, honey... replaced daily

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?

5 days, very large PP

7. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?

5.5 gallon tank... too small, but just temporary, mesh lid with saran wrap partially covering

8. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?

Just the one guy

9. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?

One extra, same type that he has, but slightly larger

10. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?

No

11. How often do you clean the tank and how?

N/A since I just got him

12. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?

None

13. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?

It's all new to him

14. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

He's so new that I don't have any established habits. I've just been trying to let him acclimate when this happened.

I've rinsed him and tried to gently put him back in his shell... now I'm just leaving him alone. He's hanging mostly out of it still, but not moving around frantically.

7. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
10gal glass tank, mesh lid with breeder lid over the top to keep humidity in, some tape is also used to cover the top parts of the mesh lid that the breeder doesn't cover

8. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
2 - a large crab (the streaker) and a medium crab, both purple pincer

9. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
6-8 (though I realized through this experience they are all only sized for the medium crab! Looking to get more for the large)

10. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
Yes, incense, but the cage was closed securely and he was showing signs of streaking prior (did not realize until later)

11. How often do you clean the tank and how?
About every 6-8 months, stir around the sand and add more if needed

12. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
Yes (recently), washed in dechlorinated water

13. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
No

14. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
I had previously successfully gotten him back into his shell on Monday night, but he seemed sluggish and liked to stay on his back in the shell. He appears ashy, so I'm not sure if he's trying to molt or not, and he didn't seem frantic the first time I caught him and set him up with his old shell. However, this morning I found him streaking again, curled up in a corner beneath a piece of cork bark. This time he ran a little faster (seemed more energetic) and so I had him run into a cup so that I could transfer him to a smaller container with his shell. I'm not sure if something has happened with his shell, or if he is wanting a new one (he fits well in his shell, but he may simply want a different option). He hasn't had any fights with the smaller crab, and the only strange incident is that I found his original shell buried and stuck under the substrate (I had witness him trying to use a shell much to small for him, and so I was confused, and later is when I found him streaking the firs time). I'm not sure if simply getting several new shells in his size will fix this problem, or if something else is going on! He has been a wonderfully healthy crab otherwise.

Please help! Thank you!
